I'm looking for something to replace the hole that mp3.com left. Download.com's music service isn't anywhere near as good. Basically what I'm looking for is a free site where you can download unsigned bands, or even signed bands that put their songs up for free. I just like finding underground music because I'm quite jaded with today's popular music.

Nice, this looks like exactly what I've been looking for.
I used to be a member of freshtracksmusic.com which is kinda the "wanting to be signed" music, so it's a pay service. It was like 20 bucks a year, and there were some AMAZING bands, some I've seen live before and adored like Zox (from Maryland I think) and Fighting Gravity (from Eastern VA, maybe Richmond). They both opened for the greatest band of ALL TIME, Cowboy Mouth.
Sorry, I'm rambling.
Thanks bored2k. I'll definitely be warming up the Nomad for this site ;)

I personally know several excellent rock bands. And I'd love to be able to upload their music, but they won't allow me to :'( . The @#$%^ claim theyre too good -wich is true- and theyre music is not copyrighted so someone might steal it.
edit - they might not be unsigned, but i have heard some pretty wicked awsome bands on rhythmbox's streams [specially on groove salad stations]. But I know, youre more of a Van Halen person

Actually, no, I'm not a big Van Halen fan, I've just used them in examples because of machiners first mention of how hard they rock. They DO rock hard though ;) David Lee Roth just annoys the crap out of me, and by the time Sammy Hagar came around, they were kinda on their way down. I DO like For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, but most of it is either annoying because of "Diamond Dave" or just not very stimulating. I know I'm going to upset a few fanatics there.
Anyway, you should explain to those people who won't let you upload that they're music IS copyrighted. I was in journalism in college, and one of the classes was Media Law. As long as you can show that it was yours first, you're protected by copyright laws from the time the music is created.

If a body puts something to paper, it's copywritten.
