either the alternatives mentioned in the link or run Itunes in a virtual machine.

Any alternative is not going to be iTunes ;-)

What do you want that Banshee or Rhythmbox don't have? Please be specific, so we can help you.

Probably bad form to add to the OP's original post but closely related...

I really like both Banshee and Rhythmbox but neither can sync with my ipod nano. Both can play my content from the ipod, both can download content from my ipod onto my computer both appear to upload content (playlists or songs) to my ipod but they are not recognized and cannot be played by the ipod.

Just a guess, but may be one of the features the OP would like

again if this is bad form don't flame too hard just let me know.

You could look at this: http://ubuntuportal.com/tutorial-how-to-install-itunes-7-using-playonlinux-in-ubuntu-1/

Maybe that will work.

In Play On Linux, iTunes 7 and iTunes 10 show to be available for download and use; however, there seem to be some issues with iTunes 10 which is mentioned in the linked article.

The best sub for itunes I've found is just the plain, comes-with-the-os Rhythmbox. I've toyed with almost all-if not all- of the Linux-compatible alternatives (including a long and fruitless quest to run iTunes via WINE with iPod sync support; I'll save your time and tell you that it doesn't work!) but the best for simplicity, ipod support and low RAM use is Rhythmbox.

One thing is that it's not the best for editing ID3 tags (that is, if there's a problem with them it can't always fix them, and it doesn't support the "comments" box), BUT I use the Linux version of Mozilla Songbird for that (it's the best I've found for writing all the ID3 edits onto the tracks themselves, so that even Rhythmbox and iPod pick them up.)

RB also does podcasts and can be used to buy music online. It's not very fancy, but it's sturdy and does everything I need it to do.

+1 for Rhythmbox

However... recently I've taken the iTunes away even a step further. I've decided that for me, as all media is managed anyway via Linux, that when I want to play audio on my PC, I've started using Audacious. All media tags are managed via Exfalso. When I want content on the iPod I copy it there and oh... did I mention that there is no iTunes... anywhere. The iPod app is replaced with Rockbox so that I can play my ogg and flac stuff as well. I don't do much mp3 and avoid apple formats as much as possible.

I have nor iPhone neither iPod.
I like iTunes because it works together ... in oder words:
When I add some MP3 or ACC file, it copied directly in iTunes folder, which Artist > Album
In iTunes, when I edit the file tags. It automatically will effect the file's name.
That's why I think it easier for me to do.

I've tried Banshee and Rhythmbox and I like Rhythmbox better.
But my problem is the Column, I don't know how to make the column to display information that I need.
I don't know how to set column width to be fit width.

Sorry for my english.

No I have not tried iTunes with Play on Linux. I have no idea how it would work.

If you download Play On Linux, which is available in the Software Center, you will see that both iTunes 7 and iTunes 10 inside Play On Linux. But the article says that there are problems with iTunes 10 with Play On Linux so they're steering you to iTunes 7.

Scroll down to the bottom of this thread in the Wine forum for a list of How To's about installing Play On Linux: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1951681
