View Full Version : [ubuntu] Problem with GPT partion disk

Hi I'm running ubuntu server 11.10 with kernel 3.0.0-17-server and have BIG problem gettig 3TB internal drives that have its partion table with setted up with GTP. I also have some ubuntu 10.04 servers that without any problem can mount these disks, so there is nothing wrong with the disk itself.

10.04 might be mounting them, but both disks look strange. It might be just because fdisk doesn't understand gpt properly, but look at your fdisk results:
For /dev/sdb the sdb2 partition End sector is outside of the disk. It is higher than total number of sectors. On top of that sdb1 is type GPT and sdb2 is reported as type NTFS. For a true GPT disk fdisk should report the whole disk as single gpt type partition.
For /dev/sdc for example, it reports a single gpt partition on the whole disk, but again the End sector is higher (by 1) than the total number of sectors.

Sometimes errors in the partition table can happen depending what program you use to partition. For example, it seems fdisk has some bugs and it is not advised to create partitions with fdisk even if we are talking about msdos disk. you better use cfdisk or parted.

For your GPT disks, parted seems a good choice for creating partitions.

If you have no data on these disks, and you don't mind starting from scratch, you can create new gpt table with:

sudo parted /dev/sdb
mklabel gpt
exitDo the same for /dev/sdc.

If you are creating partitions with parted too, it's best to use it in sectors, not KBs, or cylinders. It's more precise. You can change the unit with 'unit s'. Simply create single partition from sector 1 to the last sector, and exit parted.

Then create the filesystem with mkfs to the one you want to use.

Are you booting with BIOS or UEFI. I do not see either a bios_grub or efi partition.

Another poster said he used gpt with MBR and had it work without a bios_grub until the recent version. But I have always used a bios_grub and grub installs without issue.

In a GPT partition map, the 31 kiB area after Master Boot Record where GRUB is usually embedded to, does not exist. When GRUB can't be embedded, its only option is to use blocklists, which are unreliable and discouraged.
However, in the GPT setup, there is no space following the 512-byte MBR for embedding the "second stage" core.img. Thus, you must make a separate "BIOS boot partition" to hold core.img. BIOS Boot Partition only needs to be about 32 KiB in size, although in most cases make it 1 MiB because of partition alignment issues

You can also use gdisk which is a gpt version of fdisk. It is in the repository, but you may want to download the newest version from the rodsbooks site.

If I underastand it correctly the boot is on sda which has msdos table and the boot flag on the root partition sda1.

sdb and sdc are only data disks, with gpt because of their large capacity.

Sorry, missed the MBR drive. So all the info on bios_grub is not necessary.

But you still may need gdisk or fixparts to work on the gpt drives. fdisk is only good on the MBR drive.
