I'm not an Ubuntu developer, but since today is the last day for making
proposals for Edgy, I think it's best that anyone who have an idea submit it
today, otherwise his/her proposals will be left as idle ranting.
thanks in advance!

Integrate Beagle in Edgy Eft, and make it more like Spotlight in Mac Os X
Integrate a stable version of XGL in Edgy, and make it possible to disable it, if the videocard don't support it (XGL turned off by default to prevent any issues)
Make it easier to configure and set up a home network with OS's like Linux, Mac OsX and Windows.
More integrated drivers like Mac OsX feature, which results in a better Plug 'n Play function.
Integrated support for wireless networking and bluetoothing.
Drop the CD-installation-medium and replace it with a DVD-installation-medium. This will hopefully make Ubuntu having more programs, drivers and functionality bundle with it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is it required to register at a site, reading through mutliple pages of proporsals, and then read a guide on how to make a contribution?
I'm sorry, I would if I had the time, but I have a lot to attend to today, and this just cant be prioritated. Let's just hope somebody's thought of my suggestions and contributed them...

Of course you can maike suggestion on these forums. Many people do. But if you REALLY wanted to see your suggestions end up in future release of Ubuntu, then the thing to do is to write specs for them. Specs are official suggestions to the developers, posts to the forums are just brainstorming among users.

adding a suggestion to the lauchpad system is really easy.
i've added about several of them.
(aspect-oriented-metapackages, better-fonts-as-default-using-polls,
games-via-apt-torrent, gnome-global-menus)
not all of my suggestions are feasible within the edgy timeframe,
most (if not all) of them will not be accepted, but ranting won't even make
the possibility possible.. so if you've got a suggestion, submit it to launchpad!

More GUI interfaces. Give people a choice to use BASH or a GUI. Especially for such tasks as mounting HDDs.
A video tutorial for ubuntu, common tasks.
Improved bug reporting system, more automated so it is easy to provide feedback.
A ubuntu chat program.
Just some ideas on the table.

*Elektrificaction
*Full support for wireless, WPA-EAP, etc...
*Everything needed to connect to any kind of network should be included in the cd
*Terminal emulator that appears from the top of the desktop, like yakuake.
*DVD release with all apps, instead of a single cd.
*Integration into a single DVD ubuntu, kubuntu and xubuntu. You just select one when booting.
*XGL working with all kind of hardware (intel, ati, nvidia...)

I second the WPA issue, it is horrific (for me atleast) to get WPA working, haven't succeded yet but it was easy in SuSE and it should be in Ubuntu too I think!
Better configuration support with Samba is my second I think.
Otherwise it is great as it is :)

Did you get WPA working with ease in suse? And about samba, you can config it with system settings and kde control center.

In SuSE 10.0 it was working right out of the box with Atheros and all (Dlink DWL-G520) and in SuSE 10.1 I just added Pacman repository pluged the ethernet and downloaded madwifi with Yast and rebooted and it worked.
I am giving samba a go again tonight but I think it worked out of the box with Mshome but when I changed the workgroup it suddenly stoped workin but it might be me who changed something more, but I would like more settings with GUI as with KDE. Well this is maybee a gnome fact than an ubuntu when I think about it.

*Terminal emulator that appears from the top of the desktop, like yakuake.
sudo apt-get install tilda
Not as good as yakuake but it does the job

If it isin't too late, I'd like to make 2 suggestions for edgy. They are most like suggestions for nautilus.
1) Under the "open with" tab (on right clicking a file and going to properties) there should be 2 options.
a) Open file with - This option should open only that specific file with the specified application.
b) Open file type with - This option should assosciate all files of that type with the specified application.
Please tell me if this already exists.
2) There should be an address-bar type thing in nautilus so that we can go directly to the place where we want to (ex. going straight to /home/sukarn/.wine by the address-bar, instead of first enabling hidden files). This is already there in Konqueror.
Again, tell me if this already exists. I am quite new to ubuntu/linux so I dont know everything.

I doubt anyone who affects edgy will see this and do anything but the best feature that could be added for practical purposes is... an install grub feature.
Grub is always coming up in the forums as an issue. Grub is lost, grub has errors.
Mepis and Puppy have grub install features. It would be nice if in the control panel somewhere there was a feature to install grub. A feature that installs grub to the hard drive. It would be used to install grub to the hard drive from within your booted system. If you made a flopy during install and now wanted to install grub to the hard drive and keep the floppy as a backup or for any reason you are in your system and want to install grub to the hard drive.
A feature to update grub. In case you add another OS and choose not to install their bootloader. That way you can go into your ubuntu install and update grub.
And finally a feature to run grub from the live cd as a recovery option, If you get a dreaded error 17 or error 22 etc and you can't boot into your install. You put in the live cd. Go to the grub feature in the control panel and reinstall grub to the hard drive.
If Mepis and Puppy (PUPPY for christ sake! it is only 100mb and runs off a flash drive) can have this feature than it can't be to hard to port to UBuntu. They are open source system so their grub feature code is there.
I'm sure Edgy will be great. I thought Breezy was great. I am astounded by my Dapper install and I can only imagine what Edgy will bring. Ubuntu is great, around here Christmass comes twice a year. (I can hardly believe in 6 months I get another upgrade!!)

To up usability another notch:
A nice, easy config utility for X. Odd resolutions, dual monitors, etc. are a major pain to do by hand for new users. An option to auto-config XGL/compuiz, if you can't work a way to get non-open drivers in, then make it an option once the drivers are installed. Should (hopefully) be rather trivial for ~75% of systems.
A nice GUI for alien like what you did for apt, to the non-command line users we're hoping to eventually handle it adds "native" support for RPMs.
Integrade samba, try to grab the config of their network. A GUI utility for the most basic samba config options would help make adding an ubuntu box to an exisiting network easier.
Last, a short intro video would make it a lot easier, just show the basics of how to use Synaptic and a couple other basics.

1a) this is already the case
1b) right click on file → properties → open with
2) not so obvious: press Ctrl + L
2) more obvious: View → Location Bar

if you want to add a spec, use the following URL:
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+addspec
if you want to see the specs that are in the pipeline,
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+specs
the deadline is overdue, today is the 13.6.2006
please do not post in this thread!

I know 1b) already exists. I asked that 1a) and 1b) be made available as choices. Like a bar be drawn between them making them like 2 seperate sub-sections in the "open with" tab.
Thanks for the others.
When you say "this is already the case", do you mean that its already been asked for or is it already there and I am too stupid to find it?
