mysql authentication

I've been trying to set up a configuration in 11.10 in with users are authenticated against a mysql or postgresql database with no success.The small amount of info i found was completely outdated.
if someone could point be in the right direction that would be great

(Id rather not go down the ldap or kerberos road)

yea i found out about this a few days ago but i dont really know how to get started
