I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and I am planning on upgrade. I wonder what is going to happen though, next month is the official release and don't know what to expect.

I heard Rhythmbox is back?
is there the choice to use Gnome 3 in the new release? I dont know if my hardware will have the power to run Unity so I need to plan the switch so I dont end up with an unusable desktop environment.

Anybody has any thoughts?

Listing the full changelog will be hard, so I'll just copy from my memory:
- Unity is more stable. The Launcher and Dash changes color WITH the wallpaper. (and if your computer can't run Unity 3D, then there's the option to run Unity 2D)
- The HUD debuts.
- Rhythmbox is back, while Banshee gets the boot.
- Mono completely removed, along with Tomboy, Banshee, gBrainy, which uses Mono.
You can run GNOME 3. Just install it from the repos.
Even though for me it's pretty stable now, it's still Beta so THINGS WILL BREAK.

I am glad to have the choice of Gnome 3, I have been using it in another distro in a different computer and I kind of like it. I tried to use Unity before but it wont run on my hardware so it always kicked me back to Gnome Classic.

I am kind of exited about this release hopefully works well in my PC.

I'll be happy to hear what other have experienced with the Beta version.

Thank you.

Been running the beta exclusively on my laptop here for a couple of months and other than a couple of minor glitches (to be expected with beta) it has been great. Initially hated Unity but after a bit of use and configuration I find it's actually a very efficient and unobtrusive environment to be in on this screen format (16:9).

However, using it intermittently on my desktop I find it not so nice there. With a much larger and taller (rather than wide) screen with many windows running at smaller size the global menus are a real hinderance. That said, I've not spent much time in it on there and the Gnome fallback (or classic as commonly called) seems to work nicely and is very much like the 10.04 interface.

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 Unity 2D on a Dell 4600 P4 with 2 GB memory and a low-end video card. So far it's OK but it is still beta and I'm going to wait for a while to do a complete upgrade. 10.04 is supported for another year, I'm not in a rush to upgrade.

I run 10.04 on the same machine in dual boot. Probably will wait for a couple months after the final release before upgrading.

Beta 2 is almost ready for release. Some of us a planning to test the ISO images on Monday 26th before the Beta 2 images are finalized.

Anyone can join in.

The best way for you to find out what has happened to Ubuntu since 10.04 was released is to download a live CD and try it out.

I would recommend that you create a extra 6GB partition and install it into that and run 12.04 and set it up the way you want to before you convert your 10.04 to 12.04. You have stayed with 10.04 for a reason. Now, you are going to make a big jump. First find out where you are going to land.

Gnome 3 is standard on Ubuntu from 11.10 but you might be referring to Gnome 3 shell. There is an important difference. Gnome 3 shell is an optional extra. You install that after 12.04 is installed, then you get the option to log in to the user interface of your choice at the login in screen. Click the Ubuntu icon that is part of the panel where you put your password.

Regards.

Just to clarify, while Banshee, gbrainy, and mono won't be installed by default, they'll still be available for easy install in the Software Center. And if you do an upgrade and already have them installed, they won't be removed.

On a similar note, the classic two-panel GNOME desktop will be available in the repositories as well.

And it's definitely more stable now.

Kde seems more stable too. My previous issues with kde have been bugs and speed, but 4.8 seems to have fixed this.

I have been using 12.04 on a 16gb Pen Drive, without any major problems,
seems good but as stated still in Beta, will not be in a rush to upgrade as I am completely happy with 10.04, and if the final release of 12.04 is as good as Lucid then I may consider upgrading. I am posting using 12.04 on the pen drive.

But very feature-poor too.

Hey HUD is frustrating! Mark said that it will replace application menu in next Ubuntu 12.10. :lolflag: this HUD stuff makes my work more harder!!

Anyone having problems getting wi-fi and mobile broadband working on certain models of Samsung netbook?

The 12.04 release should solve many of them. I've successfully, run both Ubuntu and Kubuntu 12.04 on my Samsung N130. No more messing about with third party PPAs and Googling for the Realtek driver and then finding that wi-fi doesn't work when coming out of suspend mode. ](*,)

My main PC is no more but at least I can run Ubuntu on my netbook now.
