well, ufortunately I ditched ubuntu for mandriva recently, but since you're dealing with wine, I'll try to help out if i figure anything out.

I'm currently installing wc3 tft right now, however, I ended up with an error about it not being able to locate the cd. I beleive using one of the common nocd cracks would help solve this. however, as i stated, i'm currently in the middle of trying this out this week. I'll update any progress I make.
they're both linux systems, and its basically an issue with wine.
so, if i find out anything I'll give you a shout.

You should have read the sticky but...

http://www.playonlinux.com/en/

Download it, it has a step by step tutorial on doing so. It's basicaly a small app that creates small windows installations (instances of wine) for each game you own. Each of those installations is tailored to running a particular game you select to install from a list.

This should help you, TFT works quite nicely on my laptop. I do reccomend a nocd (not because of copy protection, just because I hate inserting cds)
