You can, however, download Fedora or CentOS (and get 99% of RHEL) or free.

Windows 8 feels like Gnome Shell with extra slow on top. If I wanted to get that, I'd just install Ubuntu with GS, then put random junk on the system until it slowed down. Voila! Instant Windows 8 feel :D

Windows 7 is pretty damn good and I only paid $30 for it. I agree that $200 is asking alot but then again if you get it on the day it launches and then there isn't a new version for 3 years you are paying 20 cents a day. Not really something I would complain much about. That and most people are getting a liscense for free with prebuilt machines. The only real reason for me to buy another windows liscense would be if i was building a gaming rig and if i could afford to build a gaming rig the windows liscense wouldn't be too big of a deal
