View Full Version : [ubuntu] 15.6" stretched display

Hello,
I've been using Ubuntu for a couple of years now. After my previous laptop "died" i got hold of a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 (1143). I bought it without operating system, installed extra RAM, Windows and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
By now I have two problems that I can't solve:
1. I cant activate the touchpad-scrolling. there is no option in the GUI to activate it.
2. the resolution is apparently for a 15" monitor, and I have a 15.6" so everything is stretched. I also can't activate the Visual Effects on the Appearance Menu.

can anyone help me? cuz right now, my Windows has a better functionality than Ubuntu :\
thanks
j.k.

It has been a long time since I use 10.04 and things are done differently in more recent versions of Ubuntu. So, I may get this wrong.

Visual Effects on Ubuntu require 2 things. A video card/adapter that can run the visual effects and a video driver that can make use of the capabilities of the video card.

Let us assume that you have a capable video card. Then when you select visual effects in the Appearance menu the utility should search for a proprietary driver. To do so you must be connected to the Internet.

Is that the problem? Not being connected to the Internet was the reason I could not activate a proprietary driver and get visual effects when I first installed Ubuntu. The utility just tells you that no driver could be found. Doesn't it? If I remember correctly.

For your information, on later versions of Ubuntu we use a utility called Additional Drivers. We do not do this through the Appearance menu.

If you can install a proprietary video driver then you will get a settings utility with that driver that will have options for solving the stretching of the desktop.

On my system I have options for scaling in the proprietary driver settings utility.

As for the touchpad, someone else will need to advise you.

Regards.

Check 'Additional Drivers' and see if there is a driver available for your graphics card there and if it is disabled.

It's not the screen size that counts, it's the resolution. Your laptop has a native resolution of 1366 x 768. System/Preferences/Monitors might tell you what resolution is being used, but I don't have access to a computer with Intel graphics, so I don't know for sure.

In my opinion, running an old OS on a new computer will often cause problems.

10.04 LTS the current LTS release and supported for another 13 or so months. Currently 10.04.4 actually. ;)

"Supported" is good, but if the old kernel doesn't support modern devices, it's not a good choice.

True, but OP hasn't mentioned what that graphics card is.

.K., could you please post the output of:

lspci... please. Then we can see if this is or isn't supported by 10.04 LTS. If it's not natively there could be a fix regardless. ;)

Intel HD Graphics 3000 on Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520, but i thing the problem not caused by graphics card, cause my P4 2GHz with 2 MB intel graphics is still ok with Ubuntu 11.10 intalled on... and still go on...
but i think...
you have to check your screen resolution and deepth setting, i guest.

...and the resolution-drop-down-menu only offers 960 x 600 (16:10) and 800 x 600 (4:3)

sorry for the late reply guys, i was on exile, in windows

p.s. right now i have no propietary (additional?) drivers working or installed

Hi .K.

There may be clues on the Xorg's log. Could you post the content of that log? It is this file:

/var/log/Xorg.0.log
You can paste the file here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/, and post back the link.
Regards.

Do you mean it's solved? If so, please mark the thread as 'Solved' from Thread Tools. Or is the file posted to pastebin? ;)

I'm afraid we don't see the link to it.

Once you paste it, copy the link from the browser, and post it here. That way when we click on it, it would take us to the page.

oh, i didn't know how it worked
Don't worry, it happens to all of us once in a while.

I took a look at it, and this is what I see:

The edid from the monitor seems to be getting OK.
Instead of the intel driver, you seem to be using the vesa driver.

I believe you have an Intel HD Integrated Graphic (contained in the i5 core itself). Since support for them came stable after 10.04, I would recommend using a ppa to update the driver:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade
Then, make sure that your xorg.conf uses the intel driver:

...
Section "Device"
...
Driver "intel"
...
EndSection
...
Then restart your machine.

Tell us how it goes.
Regards.

Hello!
so, you are right, i hace an Inter HD Graphic, I installed that one extra on windows since I bought my computer w/o OS.

i did
apt-get update ( it worked fine )
add-apt-rep... ( it also worked fine ) and
apt-get upgrade (here i get the following:

sudo apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

is that right? i expected to get at least one number greater than zero .. o.0

anyhow i tried to check my xorg.conf but i have no such file, or i'm not able to find it w/the GUI search option...i've just restarted my machine and it seems that nothing has changed :\

...i took the freedom to post my actual Xorg.0.log here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/936168/

i hope we are nearing the solution :P,
.k.

Sorry I messed up the order of the commands (it is fixed now).

Run this again:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade
Then, reboot.

Did you mod your xorg.conf so it specifically use the intel driver?

Regards.

How do i "mod" xorg.conf? where do i find xorg.conf?

thax for your time!
