at first you should run update manager and check for any pending updates
after this try ubuntu software centre and locate few apps there
i would recommend the following :
abiword
vlc player
google chrome
locate few puzzle games if interested

Hi What do you want to do, use the system like any other 1. Ubuntu can be used in every day life the same as windows, If you are talking about learning the in,s and out,s of linux use google or ask Questions in the forum. Have you updated your system since install with update manager

This. This is the goodness that is Ubuntu, or for that matter Linux in general. After you make sure your software is up to date, do what it is you want to do. Open the software center and type in what you might like to do. This is my biggest reason for using Ubuntu, and Linux in general: it's freedom to do as you wish with your computer.

Also, welcome to the forums, and to the goodness that is Ubuntu :)
