i am trying to run a ppa for xbmc. after i type in the ppa's location i am asked for my password ([sudo] password for ???:) but it will not let me type it in

You normally don't see your password as it is entered - :)

Are you sure it wont let you type it in?

Or is it just not showing what you type?

Because its not supposed to show what your typing.

Try typing it anyway, and hitting enter.

Does that work out for you?

Yes, this is correct. When you get a password request in a terminal, you don't see anything when you type the password in. Just type it in (carefully...) and hit enter.

^^^ This. Just type in the password as per normal. It is working, but a security feature of the terminal is to NOT give visual feedback for passwords.

It is possible to edit a system file to have asterisks show up, it is not recommended though as any fault while altering/saving the file can leave you with a crippled admin account.

solved. i was using my number pad and it was not recognizing it. thanks.
