That ugly, cross-eyed interloper is not the real Tux. This is the one and only Tux:

What's this "we" stuff?
Seriously though, that isn't the official mascot. Fire up the gimp and hammer your own unofficial one out.

I agree with the OP. Actually I think both versions of Tux sux, except as a stuffed toy.
Tux need to grow up! https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Penguin,_Strait_of_Magellan.jpg
(I didn't know Gentoo was a penguin, btw)

Microsoft pays some very talented people to design their UI. If the Linux community set an objective to increase market share from 1% to 5% in the next year, then maybe we'll get a better penguin. Frankly I think we should all contribute 10-20 euros/dollars per copy for the OS.. even the repository servers are costly to operate. Why don't they put a "donate" link on ubuntu.com and accept credit cards like Mozilla?

On a side note as a new member, a donate button would be nice. It'd let the users of ubuntu contribute directly to the support of development and server costs.

Slightly off topic, but how does Canonical & Ubuntu stay afloat, funding wise?
How are they funded?

Ubuntu is mostly funded by the paid support services that Canonical offers users and businesses :)

Well it would be a nice idea to make a penguin design for each distro of ubuntu like tux in shorts for ubuntu, tux in winter coat for Kubuntu and tux in a suit for xubuntu etc. :p

I don't think the artist intended this to be tux, but nevertheless I think this is how tux ought to be: http://browse.deviantart.com/traditional/?order=9&offset=24#/dsdlj9
Here is another cool one:

Would love to see more penguin art styles like that in Linux ^^

Yeah, I agree. The tux logo is so plain and boring. Opposite of the windows logo which is actually pretty nice. If I get some time i'll fire up inkscape and GIMP and see what I can do.

That's actually really good...
I would probably make a penguin, but my Inkscape skills are atrocious. :p

Xubuntu 12.04 has a nice new logo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Xubuntu_Logo.svg

why do we need a better penguin or maybe a completely new one, while each distro playing their role?
if it is changed, goat will cry for it... maybe... i wonder... (hope not)

Me too, I can only do good in GIMP, I don't understand Inkscape at all.

Agreed. That penguin is too naturish (is that a word?), and definitely not tux in any way.

Now that Is a good one, a donation tin , I would throw in $ 's to help out this project ,could that be with PayPal ,Please .
Since moving to Ubuntu only few week ago ,less stressful would be my opinion ,it does what I want to do ,not what it wants to ,,
what is wrong with that penguin it's sorta cute (sort of) .hey DODO has a ? ? now that really is just really B A D ):P
