Is there something I need to install to make Kubuntu see my drives all the time. I googled questions for an hour and I can not get this to work. Sometimes it sees the drive and I can access it and sometimes I cannot. If I plug the drive in before I login with a username and password it works most of the time with one hard drive. The other one Kubuntu wont see at all, except if I run lsusb in the terminal, and that only last 5 minutes and its gone. Kubuntu is set to automatically mount my drives and everything is checked. I have a ton of pictures of my kid on these hard drives so I dont want to do anything to make them unreadable and worst case scenario if I go back to windows I want them to work. So I don't know what to do from here.

Boot with a live cd and see if kubuntu can access your drives.
If it can't, then you should try with other usb ports.
