ok I'm kind of new to the whole Ubuntu experience and I have a few questions here. Is there a way to customize the whole Ubuntu experience.... The main thing I want to know now is, is there a way to customize the launcher or lauchpad or whatever you call it (like changing the color, transparency, size, and location on desktop).... I'm coming from windows and i know there are tons of programs and workarounds to customize my windows desktop (dual-booting vista here) .... so is there a program I have to download or is there a workaround to making my own personal themes and way to change the top bar and launcher? .. any help would be appreciated.

It depends on which version of ubuntu you have. Unfortunately if your running 11.04 or 11.10 your very limited (and probably frustrated. me too). Install compiz config and you can have several options on transparency. honestly it's such a pain in the *** I don't feel like writing it all. linux mint is pretty good but kinda laggy last i checked.

I would suggest installing lubuntu and running awn as the main launcher it's got alot of customization to it

I would advocate Lubuntu too, but I also read this: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/12/how-to-customise-unity-like-never-before/ which was quite good.

I'm currently testing this (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/01/how-to-install-unity-5-0-in-ubuntu-11-10/) so far it's okay but lets hope that more options show up

Unity 5.0 isn't ready yet and for me neither was ubuntu 11.10 so I rolled back to 11.04. I found myunity today and it works really good here's a link (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/12/unity-tweak-tool-myunity-gets-new-look-coming-to-ubuntu-software-centre/) to set it up other then that your kinda hit until april :(
