Try the launchpad.net link and read down the page, there appears to be a link to the development snapshot.

Apparently the easyubuntu links at freecontrib.org are down and have been for a couple of days. Everytime I try the following command wget fails to conenct:
wget http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/EasyUbuntu-latest.tar.bz2

I cannot ping freecontrib.org, either. Anybody know anything about this problem?

Not down anymore.

Yep, everything works perfect now. Probably a system maintenance or some network issues.

freecontrib.org is weathering a rather nasty DNS DDOS right now (great timing) they'll be back up soonish.

uhm... so I have always been using automatix... but I thought I would try EasyUbuntu instead...

Download .deb, install, start the program, got strange error about non-existing easyubuntu.in

wget tar, unpack, run python easyubuntu.in, got strange error about edgy.xml not found...

added to sources.lst and did apt-get update/upgrade, no updates on easyubuntu available... ](*,)

ok, so, this obviously doesn't work very well.

I don't think that easyubuntu supports edgy yet.

Same here. I might go try Automatix instead, or, in the spirit of keeping Xubuntu fast and slim, I might just figure out how to manually install the bits I need.

PLF lost the ubuntu maintainers. They have new ones now, and are handling the transition in there usual professional fashion. More details in French here. http://blog.freecontrib.org/ It was somewhat unclear to me via translation software, but the gist I got was "We did this wrong and it should be better now." But that is not correct...

Fixed: Use http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/files/easyubuntu_latest.deb

I tried this over Christmas and it dumped my Third Party Edgy repository entries replacing them with a bunch of Breezy entries, replaced my US mirror too. It really should check for the right distro and location and never dump existing source entries, it should cat them.

Otherwise, it worked, but very slowly with no indication of progress and only after you cancel the system update it runs first (tries to download the 21 MB kernel update, 50 MB+ of Ofc updates, etc.) With a dial-up connection, you can't just auto-update in Edgy anymore. This needs to be modified before Easy Ubuntu is easy or appropriate.

Just read the list of things it does and do them yourself with Synaptic. I had already done most (multimedia, mscorefonts, extra repositories) and I'm still afraid to try the video drivers it would install.

...Good idea, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

I can see that this software is no longer maintained, but can anyone tell me why? Is the project dead for good?

houstonbofh
February 10th, 2008, 07:10 PM
I think one of the reasons for the neglect is that it got easier to do the things it did within Ubuntu. It came into being to work around a lot of manual script editing, and modifications. Those are no longer needed...

I can see that this software is no longer maintained, but can anyone tell me why? Is the project dead for good?

Why?
Because it was a piece of junk. imho.

I personally tried several versions over the
years and none of them worked.

And yet they had the gall to piss and moan
about how Automatix did them wrong.

If Automatix used any EU code; all they did
was make it better.

Furthermore, installing extra software is so
easy now you don't even need Automatix any
longer.

Let those fools in Laramie go with it.

It wasn't a piece of junk, it simply got merged into Ubuntu in 6.10. The meta-package called ubuntu-restricted-extras takes from EasyUbuntu.
