View Full Version : Any interest in a Linux WoW Guild?

I recently overcame my final hurdle to removing Windows from my home PC: World of Warcraft.

I was blown away with the ease of configuring WoW on WINE and Ubuntu (6.06 LTS). Thanks to the excellent package provided on the Ubuntu Wiki's WINE page (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Wine?highlight=%28wine%29) I was able to get WoW configured and running within 20 minutes (getting the nvidia-glx package to work took a bit of additional tinkering).

To celebrate, I'd like to create a Linux enthusiasts guild on the new Jaedenar PVP server. Is anyone interested in rolling a character there and supporting the cause?

Edit: I'm hoping to at least get 10 folks so that we can pen a guild charter. However, if you just want to stop by and pal around with my Horde characters, that's cool too. I've got 3 currently: Minoton, Thom and Ubuntu :D

Eh, what the hell. It may actually get me back into the game.

Edit: I'm going to gloat for just a moment, and mention that the package on the wiki is my doing. :D I'm also extremely happy to know it was helpful to you.

I can theoretically do this, but I don't know how much time I would spend on that server. My friend is on another server which I am making a character on, so I don't know.

I would be intrested, but i am not in that server, but damn it would be cool to own the server as a Linux guild:P, sorry i was letting myself go.

I think thats the server that I just created a character on! Ill add your chars to my friends list and PM you if I see you. (note: I have 1 month left of play time, saving money to go to ireland in 2 months)

I'll roll a char on this sever, however until I get my main leveled up, I may not be around a whole heck of a lot. Just a couple of quick questions. Horde or alliance? Name?

I'm up for it, are you still running it?

- What's the name of the guild?
- What does the tabard look like? (I have an example below)
- I also have unlimited bandwidth/space @ angrykidjoe.com

If it isn't either

A) A clan centered around Chuck Norris
B) A clan centered around people who can't stop thinking about Chuck Norris
C) A clan called "Blood Legion"

. . .then as the old saying goes "Best of luck to ye." :D

And who knows. . .maybe when I get my credit card info running + start playing, I'll look y'all up.

My character name is AngryKidJoe (Undead Rogue) - Unfortunately, I'll be playing on my windows drive until my new system comes in. Power surge took out my Kubuntu drive. Give it about 3 weeks and I'll be 100% Linux.

Here are some shots of a possible tabard.

Since the original poster hasn't responded nor been on WoW lately (added to friends list), I'll step up and take over - unless he steps up to the plate.

Send me a tell or mail on the server. I'm still fairly low level and not enough gold to start the guild, but I'm working on it. All ready have a mule named "Tuxthemule".

The website and forums are under construction.

Any coin donations to Tuxthemule or AngryKidJoe (would strickly be used towards guild creation funding, access would be given to the mule) would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! I am so getting into Linux now. I spent 160 on NewEgg yesterday to make a Ubuntu-based computer (in addition to my ancient laptop). This posting really cought my eye.
Before, I've been on Firefox fanatic teams for everything (http://moznews.sourceforge.net/cp/)... Which is actually only BOINC (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/). I just did a search for Linux on BOINC, and there are a bunch of small, unorganized teams. I think I'll stick with SFX, since it's thriving for so long (once upon a time, when BOINC was used by the good-hearted individuals, the team made 8th place in the world! Since then, HUGE businesses like HP and the IBM team have overidden individualist teams.).
Anyway, I was wondering if there is like a Linux, or maybe a Ubuntu-specific fan base of stuff or stuff... That would be cool.

Actually, I was looking around and the PvE servers actually seem to be a lot more 'friendly.' and less hostile, less griefing, etc. I might decide to create the guild on a PvE server. Opinions?

Wow, they didn't delete my 46 Rogue on the PvE server "Thunderhorn." It's been over a year. Seems that's where I'd start it if anyone is interested.

Sorry about that. Work and real life have kept me busy quite a bit these days .

Also, since my subscription is running low and I might take a break until the expansion is released, I've only been playing on the Dark Iron server (trying to hit 60 with my main there). I've taken a break from Jaedenar.

I don't think I'd have time to re-roll and level a character on another server but if folks need a hand on Dark Iron (especially against marauding Hordies) and I'm online, give Grimogsh (lvl 56 dwarf rogue) a whisper.

Even just signing on to sign the guild sheet to get it running would be appreciated.

I promise that I would join, if I had WoW! I trully back your idea (-donation), except I can't join you. I will, one day... If you want more siggies, try more publicity-- try forums on other distros or Linux fansites.

Yeah, I'm working on that. I have to get WoW installed again first. I screwed up my Ubuntu install really bad trying to tweak something and forgot to make backups. :-)

I have it posted at Linux-Gamers.net and the official WoW Guild forums, though.

All fixed and need only 3 more signatures.

just ran into this post. i'm on vacation at the moment, but when I get back to the real world (in about a week/week'n'a'half), I'd be up for rolling a new character on Thunderhorn and joining your guild. i'm a horde fanatic anyways - this is perfect.

unfortunately, i haven't gotten WoW running properly on linux yet, but i haven't given up. if anyone has any experience getting WoW running with an intel integrated 915 video card, please tell me!

I'm working on getting the forums up. My webserver gets a harddrive upgrade this week so I may hold off until that happens. Thanks for the support.

If anyone is hesitant on creating a new character, I'll flat out drop what I'm doing and either create a lowbie with you or pull you through quests with my main.

In the best interest of World Wide Linux users, I made a PC on the Oceanic Server called Aman'Thul. I'll switch over the guild info when the guild is created there.

PC name is: Uunurru

I've been thinking about starting to play again for some time now. But I forgot my account password and am therefor in the process of contacting blizzard to get a new one and so forth... #-ohehehe doh!

But it idea sounds interresting. I'm also much more in favour for a being on a PVE server.

Thing is: You are most probably on the American servers while I'm European!!! NOOO!

Actually, if you read the last post, you'd notice that I'm switching it to an Oceanic server for just that purpose. The forums will also be up today. I'm working on them right now.

Are Europeans allowed to log on to Oceanic servers? If so how does one do it?

I haven't been able to find the server in my server list inside the game, but I'm pretty sure that it only shows European servers. Haven't been able to find an answer on Google either.

No you cannot, we are all separate, sadly.
