I've just come across an article (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/12/how-to-make-ubuntu-11-10-look-and-feel-like-gnome-2) implying that Gnome 2 "classic" is not pre-installed on Ubuntu 11.10.

If that is true, I consider that a huge loss for myself :'(

Is there really no Gnome 2 pre-installed? Is it a hassle to get Gnome 2 instead of Unity or Gnome 3?

What alternatives are there? If switching to another distro (Debian?) is easier, then so be it (but not without a knot in my stomach, sniff).

It seems the answer's provided on askubuntu.com (askubuntu.com/questions/65069/is-it-possible-to-keep-gnome-2-in-11-10) already.
