I have a number of issues with file-roller, some complete show stoppers for me, I've checked on launchpad and sure enough they've all been reported, indeed file-roller has so many outstanding show stopping bugs I'm amazed its still in the main distribution at all.

But perhaps why, is becoming apparent, I need a replacement to file-roller, not something that enhances it (like 7zip) but something that entirely replaces it, allowing me to uninstall file-roller so I don't have to go through the agonies of fixing machines its broken again.

If your looking for a GUI , I use Xarchiver in Xubuntu.

Oh wow, thanks!

I was able to open a 81.6GB tar file on a network share, and extract a single 460 byte file from it all within 2 minutes!

With file-roller it would have taken about an hour before it crashed, leaving massive amounts of crud on my local HD (amongst its many errors file-roller places temp files (hidden) in your home directory tree rather than in the /tmp folder where they belong.

I had a look at it, it seems a good piece of software (without having used it), but I was also left concerned about it's licence and open sourceness of it.
