View Full Version : [ubuntu] Broken Video Playback

Dan Again
December 12th, 2011, 07:28 PM
My systems seems to be unable, or at least unwilling, to play video. I was trying to fix a problem with Banshee (crash on switch to "Now Playing" screen) and found something that suggesting typing...

XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1

in a terminal. I also noticed updates to xorg edgers right before this, so I'm not really sure what the problem is.

When I try to open DRIconf I get the following message...

Could not detect any configurable direct-rendering capable devices. DRIconf will be started in expert mode.

I'm using an i3 processor with onboard graphics. Here's some more info...

You are using the software rasterizer..

The video driver should be i915/i965
The vendor should be Tungsten Graphics etc
The render Mesa DRI Intel(R) etc

Can you define exactly which i3 ? pre-sandy, sandy or Ivy? (err Ivy not avail yet)
Good performance on these GPU requires kernel >= 3.0 & xorg-edgers ppa.

Post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file ...maybe the GLX/DRI modules fail to load.

Could just try reinstall/re-configure xserver-xorg

First of all, thank you VERY much Bicycle...you've responded to several of my posts and have been very helpful. I really appreciate your knowledge and willingness to share it.

I tried to reinstall/reconfigure x with the following...

sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

That didn't seem to change anything. Basically, when I open a video file, Totem opens and I hear the sound, but no video. Usually, the display will turn black for about 2-3 seconds every 2-3 seconds. When the screen is black, no sounds comes out.

Here is the what I found in /var/log/Xorg.O.log

It all looked fine except for the 2nd to last line..
GPU crashed
[ 59.120] (EE) intel(0): Detected a hung GPU, disabling acceleration.

Your xserver packages look to be up-to-date. (9/12/2011)
You're using xorg-edgers with
https://launchpad.net/~sarvatt/+archive/intel-sna
to get sandybridge support ?

It has just jumped up to 20111212..

I added the intel-sna package and the problem is fixed! Thank you so much. I'm still having video tearing issues, though...any chance you could offer some more advice on how to resolve those?

You can try
driconf & set sync to vertical blank.

Is your tearing on openGL or video playback ?
Are you using VAAPI ?

I would suspect unity/compiz composite is likely culprit.
You could install/run:
ccsm

Be very careful not to change too much but find openGL & composite tab & check/expt the vsync settings..
You may have to set composite refresh rate or 2xrefresh or to a fixed number & not auto..

If the desktop is broken beyond repair can run:
unity --reset

I have a driconf installed and believe I have set sync to vertical blank, but I'm not really positive. I am still getting the following error message when I open driconf...

Could not detect any configurable direct-rendering capable devices. DRIconf will be started in expert mode.

I'm not really sure what you mean vis-a-vis openGL or video playback. If I can could solve screen tearing in Totem (playing video files stored on my HD) I'd be happy. I don't know if I'm using VAAPI.

The system I am dealing with is a dedicated HTPC - I don't need it to have any special effects or really any capabilities other than basic internet access (for media streaming and downloading) and video/music playback. I've read in several places that Unity/Compiz are likely culprits of these problems. Is there a way I can turn them off? I have ccsm installed and have tinkered with it...I can make the problem a little better or worse, but have never really been able to "solve" it.

Are there any other terminal outputs or screen shots I could post that would be helpful?

Could try deleting
~/.drirc
file & restarting driconf..

Your desktop is drawn with openGL with the effects added by composite manager (mutter/clutter/metacity/compiz).
Unity is a compiz plugin..

Video playback is normally an overlay with h/w support. I believe DRI is used with intel.
Video decode in h/w is possible with VAAPI (intel, nVidia, AMD).

VAAPI is supported by intel driver (improving all the time)
Run
vainfo
to check the install capabilities..
VAAPI is a very good thing for HTPC..but you need to use media player that supports it..
special build of VLC or XBMC.
Totem use gstreamer backend & I think it is possible to get it to work with VAAPI.

XBMC (& mythtv) are/have proper HTPC interfaces..

To try without compiz you could:
- login as unity 2d session.
- install the gnome3 fallback (Gnome 3 made to approximate Gnome 2 Classic) package & then login as a gnome 3 session. This uses metacity for effects..

I tried deleting drirc as you suggested, but it didn't seem to work. Prior to deleting that file, when driconf would start in expert mode, there would still be lots of options and it seemed as if it was, in fact, configuring a device. Now when I start it, there are no options whatsoever, I tried adding a device, but didn't have much luck.

When I run vainfo I get the following message...

dan@MediaCenter:~$ vainfo
libva: VA-API version 0.32.0
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
libva: va_getDriverName() returns -1
vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit

I did some research, but couldn't figure out how to fix this problem without restricted-drivers-manager.

I suspect driconf was just changing the config file & never the h/w.
The xorg-edger's webpage recommended deleting that file at each upgrade..

It is possible driconf is out of sync with the SNA video driver..
The uber-users probably edit a config file directly.

Read thru' /var/log/Xorg.0.log for any errors..it is possible that DRI interface is still not working..

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep DRI
glxinfo | grep OpenGL

Here is the output from the terminal...

This is still a problem
[ 86199.101] (WW) intel(0): cannot enable DRI2 whilst the GPU is wedged
then the software rasterizer is loaded...

I guess you have to keep updating & hope..

There is the possibility of an additional permissions problem with DRI.
The intel driver on 10.10/11.04 seems to need this in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Section "Module"
# Load "dri"
# Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "DRI"
Group "video"
Mode 0660
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "intel"
# Option "AccelMethod" "UXA"
# Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

All it really does is set the video group & permissions...it may not be necessary anymore...
