OK so I bought (or my parents recently bought, I'm only 15) a Brother HL-2270DW. I wanted to set it up as a wireless printer and everything worked smoothly for our family's Windows machines since the printer came with a disc.

However, for linux it was difficult. First, I went online and tried to install the HL-2270dw lpr and cupswrapper drivers. I did everything, but when I clicked "Print test page" nothing happened.

Then I saw this "add printer" function and tried that. I clicked "find network printer" and looked for the nodename of the printer. Then I clicked it and it automatically searched for drivers for the "HL 2270DW series" Pretty soon I installed the Brother ppd files. Then it asked me to choose a ppd file, so I just chose recommended and recommended (the generic PCL-6-PCL-XL driver. And voila, test page working smoothly!

But amidst this all I'm confused. What is the difference between lpr and ppd, and why didn't installing the lpr using Brother's own directions work?
