Hi all,

I have now installed Ubuntu twice because the first time I did the OEM install and after the install I was asked for my user name and password but I was certain I hadn't been asked during install to create one. So, I rebooted into my Xandros install and checked this group for help finding that someone mentioned that the user name was OEM and the password was established during the install. Thinking that I was just not attentive enough to have noticed the prompt for a password, I reinstalled Ubuntu using the text install (whereas someone else suggested that the text install would definitely prompt to create a password during installation process). But, even though I watched closely anticipating the password creation prompt, I did not see one. And, the same situation exists this time I boot. I'm still asked for a username and password. I have neither since I was never offered the oportunity to create them nor was I informed of any defaults.:???:

I'm dual booting with Xandros 3 and using LiLo as my boot manager, if this matters. So after I did the first clean install of dapper I loaded Xandros 3 and reconfigured LiLo and the rebooted into dapper. But, I get no further due to this issue.

Please someone help.
Thanks

Neither does the regular install I have down loaded the install disk twice. The install disk asks for a password before it allows you to go to the GUI to click on the install Icon. I have used the 32 bit version and it asked for the password during the install but not on the forst boot screen likw this versiopn does this is a fatal error.

Gary, This may be due to having only one user added. If you add other users It may be different. Although, I always add my wife during the install, so I am uncertain if I'm correct. I have not attempted an OEM install since dapper, due to this issue. Obviously no one ever commented in any attempt to help. I'm home from the holiday and will be around if you have any more questions that I may be able to help with.

PS. for security alone, I would assume that you should be prompted for a password after the install and before any login, but it's not necessary while running "Live CD" because you can fix anything with a simple reboot. Settings and changes are not permanent. I have suggested the use of a Linux Swap partition, if available, for remembering customizations on future versions, but I assume that security might need some rethinking if this would ever work realistically.
PPS. If anyone else is listening and can provide official wisdom on these mysteries, then please do. Thanks in advance.
