For audio recording (real instruments like guitars, bass, drums, vocals etc.) is Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit + KXStudio a valid choice?
As far as I understand it there is only a generic kernel available.
Is that a problem for audio recording?

I have a brand new computer and can start from scratch.
Thanks!

First start with generic kernel. If thats not good for you, than go for abogani's lowlatency kernel. I'm using it in 11.04 and it's okay. Personally I had issues with jack2, and lowlatency kernel helped, but switching to jack1 helped completely. I didn't try, but maybe now I can use just generic kernel.

In another words first test what you got, and then change if/what you really need.

I don't use kxstudio ppa, so can't tell you nothing on that.

In my view, it's fine. But stay away from Unity. This thing is a mess. A the login you can choose and go for different flavours of Gnome instead of Ubuntu with Unity.
