I've had this problem for a looonngg time, but have just gotten around to addressing it. Applications frequently grey out on my computer (firefox, open office) and hang for several seconds. I've searched previous posts and see that this is often a RAM shortage issue, but I'm skeptical that this is my problem as it wasn't cured with a memory upgrade. Any help would be appreciated. Here are my specs:

Gateway MT6452 laptop running lucid
kernel: 2.6.32-34
gnome: 2.30.2
RAM: 874.5 Mb

The machine is 64-bit capable, but I'm running 32-bit on a single AMD Turion processor.

Thanks

Does this happen with all applications?

When the system is real busy (mainly disk I/O on large file copies), my applications grey out for several seconds. I'd like to eliminate this manifestation (maybe big copies at a lower disk priority than other disk I/O).

I'm not sure about all, but it happens for sure with firefox and the open office spreadsheet program
