Hello,
I am beginner and have some problems..

My laptop:
Sony Vaio VPCEA2S1E
Intel Core i3 CPU M 350, 2.27GHz
Ati Radeon HD 4500 Series

I have installed a few weeks ago Ubuntu 11.04 and KDE (I don't like Gnome or Unity) and there is my problem - in KDE my laptop is overheating.

While idle, CPU has about 60-62 degree temperature, while watching video or using external monitor temperature is up to 72 degree (it is never more than 72 or less than 60). Fan is very loud when temperature is high so fan is probably working fine.

I think it's not a hardware problem because, I have had this problem also in gnome, but I solved it by installing ATI drivers and using some widget for scaling processor, then temperature was max 56degree, which is, well, sufficient for me. In windows 7 (I have dual boot), temperature and fan noise is normal.

This month thanks to my "excelent" internet provider I can't upgrade to 11.10 (download limits) but I don't want to cook my computer either. Any idea?

Try installing LXDE, and use that instead of KDE.
It sounds like your internet provider isn't very good, so I would recommend switching to a different one.

What window manager you use shouldn't be a problem.
I do think your processor is stuck at the highest frequency. cpufreqd can probably solve it
