Can not play my downloaded video files after renaming and then copying

So I downloaded a plenty of videos from youtube, mostly in flv format, and then renamed all removing the '.flv' part in the name. Then I burnt those to a blank dvd(not rewritable). Now when I try playing those video files from the dvd, they doesn't play(the dvd was burnt alright). The files saved directly to the hard drive play fine(even after removing .flv extension).

Can you explain what happened really and its possible solution(s)?
