I have another TB SATA drive and i have 2 50GB partitions one has Windows 7 on it.
I want to know if Ubuntu 8.10 will recognise the partitions created by Windows,as i want to start using Ubuntu again.
Can anyone help me here?

First of all, 8.10 is outdated, download the latest version, 11.10 or 10.04 at http://ubuntu.com/download. To answer your question, if you use 10.04 or 11.10 there will be an option during install to use the blank partition (I assume it's blank).

Warning: Errors may occur if you don't make a swap partition out of part of the blank partition.

Been so long since I used 8.10, I don't remember -- but I believe that unlike more recent Ubuntu versions, it did not load ntfs-3g automatically. So, you would probably need to install that from synaptic.
