hi everyone:

today i was looking for some howto's for dapper, but i got a "nice" surprise. dapper and breezy howto's mixed. my question for the forum administrator is:

why not to have 2 different subforums for howto's of each ubuntu version??

i know that most of those howto's are, maybe, compatible between dapper and breezy. but i believe that is more confusing to get to the right howto for the ubuntu version someone may look for.

it's just a suggestion for the forum, but lets see what other users think.

Most likely, we'll implement the same tagging system in that area soon.

The tagging system is good.
If a howto also works in the new version of Ubuntu (whichever this is), one could simply change the tag. Otherwise nice but old howtos disappear in the archive.

Might be better if it could have multiple tags. That way, if somebody hasn't upgraded to the current version, the tip would still show for their version.

On a different note, it would also be nice if the "replies" could be cleaned up on a lot of the Dapper how-tos now that Dapper has shipped. For instance the Automatix has something like 495 replies and if they are no longer applicable because it is now stable and shipping, too, maybe they could be cleaned up. Otherwise, it makes it look very problematic to use it (I just picked AUtomatix as an example, there are a lot of others like it, too).

The tagging system makes it rather clear to me.

About this quote: You are right. But maybe moderators could talk/PM to the thread owners and discuss the possibility for them to open new threads and close the older ones. Just an idea.

pretty strange!! the poll say's something completely different.

right know 14 persons believe that each ubuntu version should have it's own howto subforum!!

I think it'd be nice to have--as we do with desktop environments--a tag that's general and appears to work for Breezy, Dapper, and Edgy.

Some HowTos just don't become obsolete.

I voted to have the howto's mixed. A lot of the information from old howto's is still good.
One suggestion I would make is another tag. One that says the howto is for the 64 bit version. That way 64 bit users could sort out the information that is designed for thier version.

I think we should generally assume most HowTos will always work for every version.

If we find out some improvement has been made in Edgy that makes a particular HowTo obsolete, we could always change the label to be "Dapper and before."
