I read that you can run UT2004 natively under linux. How is the performance? Is it less than, equal to , or better than under windows XP? Also, is the graphic quality as good?

I was a big UT fan back in the days so let meh know!

You have an Nvidia card, wich is more than enough.

No one with integrated video graphics should even try 3d games [except CounterStrike], as the lack of support for OpenGL/D3D will chew up ur proc.

The best thing about UT 2K4 is that it has a gazillion performance-changing options.

Plus, on ur system specs you should have no trouble . [D4mn ut2k4 for being 4GB's thick!! It's way too low on my *backup purposes* download queue!]

UT2004 runs great under Linux. My only beef with it is that the music player doesn't play MP3s as it does in the Windows version (it only plays OGG files). Considering this is a major 3D shooter in Linux, I think that is a very small complaint to have. :D

So is the performance on par with windows?

Its pretty much identical performance to XP with an out of the box Ubuntu installation. You will unlikley notice any difference anyway.

I've had a hard time getting UT2004 Linux performance to be on par with Windows ... I have a Geforce 6800 Vanilla (quite similar to your setup) and it can't keep above 35FPS on high detail, 1024 on any of the outdoor maps :(

UT2004 runs wonderfully under Linux. (Small maps, anyway... Assault maps are way too big and always have slight choppiness, but not enough to make it completely unplayable.)

I have an ATI Radeon 9550GE. Strangely enough, I've noticed that it seems to work better using the "ati" driver than the "fglrx" driver. Could just be me though.

By the way, the original UT (from '99) runs smooth as butter under Wine. I know I'm supposed to run the Linux port, but I was too lazy to install it again, so I just pointed Wine at the Windows EXE, set the video renderer to OpenGL, and... zoom.

Hmmm, strangely enough i have difficulties running UT on linux. I got ATI Radeon Xpres 200 and on windows it ran with no probelm. but under Linux it lags. I don't understand why,

Maybe you need to edit the ini files? Look here for some tweaks:

CPU: 933Mhz Intel
Memory: 256Mb RAM
Video: GeForce4 Ti 4200 AGP8X 128Mb (running at AGP4X due to the motherboard)
Drivers: nVIDIA official 9631
UT2004 config: Default, with OpenGL.

I get more FPS in Windoze, the onslaught maps are even playable there... in Linux at 640x480 with everything lowered down and deactivated I can -barely- play it, so it's a no-go for me. It's very playable with the default settings in everything else though, even assault maps, but I can't say I get better performance, nor worse. I've tried killing everything and just making a script to run "xinit ./ut2004" but eh, it's still better in windoze for onslaught maps :/

Have a look at the link I posted above and look for VARSize.

Also, make sure you have the latest patches. UT2004 seems to run fine on my system, but I don't dual-boot windows on that system so can't compare performance.
