Usually Ubuntu detects your network-card automatic, and sets up your internet connection.
Maybe a dumb question but have u tried to open firefox or similar?

Thanks a million,
Yes network card has been detected as I am able to view others on my windows network.
Where I am having problems is connecting to broadband via the network connection, eg In windows I get the option to connect to the internet via a LAN connection with valid username and password (login), this is not available to me (that I can find) on Ubuntu.
When trying to connect via my modem (analogue - 56k) - nothing! ACCESS SETTINGS /dev/modem. When I click AUTODETECT I get a DEVICE COULD NOT BE FOUND. so this aspect is out for the being, until I can download drivers etc etc
I am at a loss, is there not a wizard available for download somewhere?
Thanks a million.....

So nothing happens when u try to load a web page in your browser?
U could check out the starter-guide for http://www.ubuntuguide.org/#configurenetworkconnections
Never had any problems similar to yours though, and i've been running ubuntu on 5 different machines...

Hi, No browser stays blank, websites cannot be found.
Creating this connetion to ADSL via my LAN is complicated, theoretically this should be easy, but a novice must struggle I guess.
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated, as my first venture into the great world on Linux is almost a flop if I cannot enter the internet ](*,)
Cheers and again thanks a million
