Ubuntu-Geek has said we are adopting a tagging method for the dapper forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1068475&postcount=4 and http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1076845&postcount=5

Most users are not going to want to dig through three pages of irrelevant information to find a thread that applies to them. I know that we are adopting a tagging system, so why not make tabs that control the filter, for quick and easy filtering, without having to set things in a search. For example, in the "General Support" Forum, you would have a tab at the top with-"[general] Xubuntu 6.06" clicking this would ONLY show threads tagged as "[general] Xubuntu 6.06", to save users of ubuntu, kubuntu, and edubuntu from having to see these posts.

Another way to reduce the number of irrelevant pages seen when merely browsing the forum is to have an option in the profile after the part where you tell "additional information" and then "distribution" that says "only show threads tagged with my distribution". The problem with this method is it would only work with registered, logged in members, not newbie guests, who would easily become confused at the current layout, and wouldn't be familair enough with the site to "search" with proper paramaters.

Tell me what you think!

sudomania4:
I think you missed some of what ubuntu-geek has said about tags -
Phase 2 will have more filters and search options on the category level.

i know, but are those search options in http://ubuntuforums.org/search.php or are they available in the actual forum? i suggested ways to implement the search filters in the main window. the way ubuntu-geek said it, it seemed like he was just talking about adding options to http://ubuntuforums.org/search.php -thats NOT what im suggesting. correct me if im wrong, were those filters for http://ubuntuforums.org/search.php ?

You're wrong.

He meant that it would be in-line filtering *plus* more search options.

It's part of the next phase, which we haven't done yet.

Ok, thanks for clarifying. Now you have to ways to implement in-line filters. :P
My apologies for not being able to determine what ubuntu-geek meant. I appreciate your correcting me.

No worries. You said to correct you if you're wrong, so I obliged. :)

It's all good. And you would have had a fabulous suggestion if we weren't already thinking along the same lines. :)

Nice work!
