So while we wait for the big Forum make-over here is a way to the forum look like this:

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6102/6261511378_0437cf70fb.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/59930315@N03/6261511378/)

Chrome and Firefox users:

Step 1: Install Stylish (http://userstyles.org/) for your browser

Step 2: Install the Style (http://userstyles.org/styles/40915/ubuntu-forums-new-theme)

Opera Users:

Here you go, clicky! (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11367665&postcount=7) (Thanks TeoBigusGeekus)

Thanks to lovinglinux and kelybaker for this awesomeness!!

edit - Note that this is a third party change to the way the forum displays and is not in any way indicative of the way the new forum look will be when it finally arrives...

Will options for the other themes stay intact? I quite like cleanv2.

Yeah. You are just using Stylish to modify the css to make it look like the new branding.

Well, what I meant was if this is the new design that UF is going to have on the new forums...is the theme changer still going to be down there in lower left corner with the other skins to the forum?

I think it was mentioned that the new theme/branding would be the only choice due to some compatibility problem or some such thing.

I like the current theme, but that's just me.

For Opera users:
1)Put the desired (light or medium) css file in your ~/.opera/styles/user folder.
2)Get into ubuntuforums (start page) and right click the page.
3)Edit site preferences>Display>My style sheet
Navigate to the css file, choose it and click ok.
4)Refresh page.
5)FIN

The Stylish theme is good, but I am finding a bit too much white around the edges of things; kinda hard to tell boxes from each other, etc.

Overall, it's a good idea :)

Edit: 404 seems to be using the wrong OS :o

Thank you!

A small UI touch if you would like to add it:

label, #cb_cookieuser_navbar, .button, select, #searchbox button{ cursor: pointer !important;}The footer's copyright text is lacking a white background. I couldn't find a hook to style it.

When is the makeover due?

Wow. Is the final site going to look like this?

I actually like the current theme. I also wish the site would turn purple, instead of orange. Orange-white seems too traffic cone-ish.

Kudos to the devs, however. I know a lot of people will want to use this. I might take a gander over there sometime.

Also, not found, what version of Windows is that? I think I saw it in a local Home Depot, and I have absolutely no clue what it is.

I have edit the OP to try and stop any confusion, this is in no way shape or form the new look for the forum and I have no idea how it will look when it does finally come. This is just an awesome hack to get it to look closer to the new official branding and can help make the wait more bearable :)

Oh, and it is good old XP :)

I didn't even know you could theme XP. :(

Wow. I really am clueless with Windows. :)

I suppose I should have caught on to that, since the computer at Home Depot had an orange Start button. Same sort of shading/gradient, however.

I haven't used Windows for anything for about a year. Memory fades quickly.

I still have a really old laptop with Windows 95 or 98 or something or another on it sitting in a closet. It's been collecting dust for years in there...

I was just wondering, is it possible to change the default font to Ubuntu?

TeoBigusGeekus
October 20th, 2011, 11:54 AM
Talking about customization of ubuntu forums, here's a nice javascript (thanks to tjwoosta).

The threads you've participated are marked with a dot. Either because you're old and you can't see the dot, or you're simply tired of it after all these years, here's how to change it.
First create six icons (about 30x30 pixels) with gimp.

http://imgur.com/WHfC2s.jpg (http://imgur.com/WHfC2.jpg)

The 6 icons should reflect the different icons used by the forums on threads you have posted:
1)thread_dot (the normal dot icon which indicates that you've participated in this thread)
2)thread_dot_hot (as above, but the thread is hot)
3)thread_dot_hot_new (as above, but the thread is also new)
4)thread_dot_new (as above, but the thread is simply new)
5)thread_dot_hot_locked (as No2, but the thread was locked)
6)thread_dot_locked (as No1, but the thread was locked)

You can use anything you want; I personally took my avatar and customized it for each situation.

The next step is to convert your images to URI (Base 64). Here's a couple of sites to help you:
http://www.scalora.org/projects/uriencoder/
http://www.abluestar.com/utilities/encode_base64/

Now open the attached javascript (line wrapping or you'll be lost).
Every icon starts with a line similar to this:

img[src*=\"images/statusicon/thread_dot.gif\]
Directly underneath it, is a line with the actual icon, in URI format, enclosed by parentheses.
All you have to do is replace my URI code in the parentheses with your URI code, ie. to replace the first icon of the script (thread_dot.gif) with yours, replace the line that goes

data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhHwAeAOf/AAABAAIABQECDgADFQMCGQAFCAAAOgsEAgAJEgcKBgILHQAOGQ gQEgARJAARKAETGA8RDgARQQATLxUQDxATLQkYHAUZIQAaOxYY FQcZQRUZGgAfKwAbWgAgNgAeUA0fKCAcGwQiPh0fHRUjJwcnOQ AoVCQjIQErQQImch4mKgkrNwUrTAoqYwAxRAAwYikqKAE3TRMz QAA4Uwo4SQU4aAw+VAg8gS84PAk+cQM/jgZDXw8/fjg6NxZDVABIaABGfgRHegFJcFg7ARBIZBhIWT5APjhEKhNKZk RAPwRPagdObhROZABSfgZQggBSiSdKdEZGRABXdgJWfENISgBU ngBXlUpMShJYiwBfhBpadhhccRJcgwRijg5epFBWPAtilFNUUi FfelZVTgtmjEJcWR9kfzRhcxdoiABupC5ldgNvmiRnjlldXypp fxlvjwBzs15gXTBrhyRukgB2rhVypEBpgSJygQR6qydzkWprKA B9s2ZnZTNymgd+qJpjByt1olhyU5VoCACDunR0Ki99nm5wbTt/ggCLwSmCqCyBrV13hwyKu0N/lSSGuHJ7Qh+LthaNvlt+kkiEm2F/jkWIpD+LmYSCMBqTxDGPsmCIcSCUv4WAf4CCf5aFKTaVwVqPoF yRo0Oblk+Wsn6RYDKeydeDAE6bvGaXsOSHAHiXpzul0O+FATqn zG+brlahyUily+yJApSWk++LAFWoqeuNBTaw12epjXWhte6QAG KnvX2ncGCoxOSYAHCnxZ+enGaqzdScFY6odZmpUfGYAEy02e6b AOSeAG+ziqShpn6rvmuwxmayzfOfAFa52N+lFfKjAEm/4++nAGy50mC+3oS1zqivpK2vrHy61JC4uvGuAPiuAJW5yPKvGp bBf27E3sK6WaPCbO+zKX/D2o6/2XLH4vS7AKPDxqPD03zO5vXCCLnMZJ7L3/XGSvPNM/nQBcnLyPfUTMffbffUXM3eievfb/Tcdvjecdvd2t7oaurihejj4uPl4evt6vX39P3//P///yH+EUNyZWF0ZWQgd2l0aCBHSU1QACH5BAEKAP8ALAAAAAAfAB4 AAAj+AP8JHEiwoMGDCBMifDYMlkNZCiP+SzdslcSLApnBQggR4 8ByuEol7GgQwIUrf/4k4rNmFEMyIRQEAADgIoAm49at27bOHL1nxaqd25YqkqI6QARE bODq2q1kvebBi1YMG7VWkxRNakXt2q8nNQ8WyOHJlKhP+KY+qx RHTpYwcUz96nXql6sSCAlQabRoFj552bQZ2SLFhxIuY/QIOuTJU6MdBwEYQPEmVLx62bIJQYZkw2E9amBUuCFDj54uAwoO 4IDChSF1+bhx63QCQRENY+60KGCBRAsldOYEYaFUoIAcVTbYAf ctXDhgDHToGILlTqNDFg4JuqNnCwwpTjz+DIxQhcSibsLYydZy ZDqWPosgQXoAX8UDLKCZsBifXJcle5kBogQMMyxhQRaXaHLJJR +4Ackii9QgSBMZDDSADYYc001mziRQQAtZIKICESrgQYomH4Th 4BkA0EFDcQJRkIkt8GQTjRgQcLIJGAz0gIkqqoQRAymkPGIBDw d8IR5Bg3gRTDTRBFIIABAU4k8R+ljDRgojVDDaAfvsAcEXDhiU RzvPGFMDGFVCAIAIvvCzj5Wx+NPPC7EkkOQCBz3zjCNRHPmOP9 bAIQJNiCZKExp8FuROMbw0kUQSKiDRDxT3+MMPFHDwkIAIEBya wAR6NGBQOcP4UYIMSeBBSAW3IOzjjz9WzGqCPy/0wwkGRBzSgUHDDPMPABJ0MEYZplDygQZTwBmLCZwckAIDRKiyy AoGyULLQAD84AMhbeziDTrkKGPuMtNMQ8yPj+CQLSoFAcDEI3h I8gko4qDjDTnLSGLGK68s8oNBsMBrUAFY1NKMNLnkoswyu4jCS BqkLOJuQatslO0/BczQAyvQTNNMM8SwQgokbyAArEUEwULSQA+okMQZfdwhRQcFII RLxi575PPPBQUEADs=
with whatever your URI code is.

After you replace all the icons' code, save and exit.

Put the script somewhere (in your home folder for example) inside a folder of your choice.

Open Opera, go to the start page of ubuntuforums, right click and choose Edit Site Preferences.
Go to the scripting tab and for the User Javascript Folder choose the folder in which you placed the script.
Press ok and refresh.
It should all work ok.

That's fair enough. I'm only curious because, with the LTS release coming up, there will be more eyes on Ubuntu than usual, so it would be great if all Ubuntu properties match thematically.
Every little component adds to the overall impression, especially for the new users.
