I've been using Ubuntu Server 11.10 (not 11.06 as is incorrectly stated in subject line) for a little while now and recently decided to learn how to stream music from it to my 3g/4g Android phone. I'm finding that this isn't a perfect science and have come to the hypothesis that although streaming is a synthesis of different factors, file bitrate has a great impact on it's success. Though it's gotten better since moving to a new ISP with greater upload bandwidth, I still get occasional gaps in playback, most often from files at 256kpbs or above.

Rather than exhaustively convert my whole library, I'm wondering if increasing the buffer size on my server will rectify the situation. I say this having a vague understanding of how to perform such an operation (or if it will even work).

Any suggestions?

Thanks.
