or im not ready for dapper im not sure which. Basically ive had a couple problems...

One is that sometimes when i start up.... my mouse doesnt work at all. no amount of plugging or unplugging fixes it. its a plain usb mouse that is in good condition. when i reboot though it goes away. this happens like every other reboot or so. Never happens in windows however.

another thing is that somethings wrong with my codecs for totem... like it will play some things but wont give any sound... and wont play other files at all while i have to us VLC. Multimedia just isnt as streamlined as windows yet for me... perhaps i could fix it somehow though im not sure. and my totem isnt embedded in Firefox yet . i need to find mozplugger... but i did a search for the forums and didnt see it. i wish they added that to the Automatix script.

Next is games.... i only play a couple of games... and havnet invested in cedega to get them working. i dont play the games alot but i need to be able to play them to make the switch. Mainly Guild wars. btw does anyone know if older versions of cedega are free? the ones that arent the current ? because apparently you need an older version to run it anyway.

Another thing is that im using wireless and i had to write my own shel script to remove bcm4xx every time i start and then reinstall ndiswrapper. i tried blacklisting the bcm4xx module but that totally screwed things up and dint work. perhaps its fixable ill find out i guess.....

My IM client is kind of annoying... Gaim . maybe there are others that are better.......... but when i set my status to say... available or away... there is no display that shows what status im currently in. Of course gaim 2.0 just came out so maybe thats changed. a couple other basic things i cant do are leave messages to other users on yahoo while they are offline. with yahoo messenger i could do this. Oh, and sign in as invisible. not crucial though.

these are just some examples of basic things that dont work for me and keep me on windows.......... but its getting there though.

Oh, also the other day i was going to boot up ubuntu to show someone how it compared to windows boot (i edited their startup config so that no programs loaded up ) ... and id loaded a couple seconds faster than ubuntu still which was disappointing. Is initng in effect yet ? if its not that would be good news because it means that it will boot up even faster in the future.

Linux is so getting there though. just not right for me yet. although its alot more fun than windows... it does have the fun factor

If you haven't removed Ubuntu yet, run synaptic and enable the universe and multiverse repos. This will give access to all of the GStreamer codecs for Totem (good bad and ugly). But I use VLC as defualt, some use Mplayer, it's a personal choice. Much like your IM client. There are some others available too.

Totem plugin is also in synaptic, but it still isn't that good. The Mplayer plugin works better.

About your USB mouse, check in your BIOS, and enable usb for DOS devices and asign an IRQ to USB. Some mother boards have a funky boot with USB devices, this will usually work.

Linux (in general) isn't for everyone just yet, but it's getting closer. I must say it's much easier today than it was just a year or 2 ago. I can fully understand where you're coming from. Not everyone wants to have to try this, try that, right this script, change this config, just to get a working set up. But these things will only improve from user input such as yours;)
