Nice setup! Mind telling me the theme and what way of navigating between open windows you use? (I don't see a dock- and I'm not too knowledgeable about that type of stuff because all I use is Statler-Dark and tint2)

There's no dock, no panel, no nothing.
Openbox uses 1% of cpu power of a P4@3Gh and 90mb of ram at startup.

New work in progress, currently learning a bunch of terminal apps and how to customise them as they are faster when I know what I'm doing.

Both images are screenshots, one with windows open and one without.

That's the way to go. Hint: your going to want to get your terminal color scheme tweaked to heck if you plan on spending much time in there.

Now.. I'm very undecided... lol

I havent logged into Gnome Shell but twice, in the past 2-3 weeks.

But since ubuntu started using them.. I seem to have actually become quite fond of them.

Do you have CCSM installed?

If so..
Just open it, Go to the "Unity" plugin..
and "Experimental" tab, then change 'backlight mode'

nice glow just around the edges.

If you dont have CCSM installed, or dont want to install it..
you can also use gconf-editor, or dconf-editor.

Ringi! Help! lol

I can't seem to get Ambiance Dark installed right.
When I try to set it in advanced settings/gnome tweak tool
it doesnt show in the GTK theme menu, only in the "window theme"
but the window theme doesnt switch to anything when I do it.

Ive installed it in both ~.themes , and also in usr/share/themes
and still nothing! lol :(

Mabe it doesnt work with 11.10

The theme, which currently lacks a name, is in development and requires the installation of the “Equinox” GTK engine.

Unity users should note that whilst the theme was not designed for the Unity desktop it does work okay under it.

That's handled via Gsettings now. You need to input commands (don't ask me which ones, I have no idea). Haven't posted a dirty scrot in a while

11.10 uses gtk3 themes and i think ambiance dark is for gtk2 only.
note: to change themes in 11.10 i had to use gnome-tweak-tool(?) because with the included one i could only change between ambiance, radiance and contrast and did not recognize installed themes like elementary.

It really took me a while to have the nautilus-elementary on a debian system.I had to convert an old rpm package for fedora and mandriva.Unfortunately it's not developed anymore.The gtk2-engines-murrine package I compiled it again from sources for 30% transparency instead of 90% default.Now I'm just looking for a proper emerald package too. :)

Integrated Intel can be just fine - it varies chipset to chipset. I've had good luck myself, but that's not guaranteed, particularly on older models that just won't have this or that feature that Unity requires to run.

I got a couple of new walls that I love to death, and Synapse's new Places feature, sorely missed until now, has made it absolutely the transparent, forgettable center of my Ubuntu experience. I'm still not using Unity, although my reasons are astonishingly petty details that are becoming less relevant even to me the more I look at them.

Y'know, I used to find myself using Alt+F2 to run things because menus were clumsy, but it felt nerdy at the time. Now it's normal. I like that. Synapse just keeps getting better, and it's converted me into a full Zeitgeist fanboi.

I actually got this update with the Places category late, because I'd put off updates for a bit, idly seeing if I could get a month uptime. I had an X crash at 28 days, which of course didn't reset my uptime but made it seem like cheating; after I went ahead and ran the updates, this was a nice consolation.

This is the collection of the four most comforting images I've ever encountered that I could find at at least 10x6.

I've also been making much better use of workspaces of late - I'll have one filled with files I need in class, one with Chrome tabs and windows I'm saving for later, one with an image editing project, etc. and not feel the urge to close anything I'll have to reopen a few hours later. This is one of my petty qualms with Unity: no way to keep windows on other workspaces out of the dock, which makes all this compartmentalization completely worthless.

However, I also had a dream last night that Compiz had finally implemented KDE-style window spreads in the Expo view, which probably means that this obsession has tipped into an unhealthy range.

I'm experimenting with paying real money for limited access to fake books now that Chrome has a Kindle app with local caching that can pretend to be a native app. Drawbacks include that the interface can't be scaled below 800px wide - so no two-up with a gedit - and paying real money for limited access to fake books.

I've also given up on the Trailfocus / Dim Inactive plugin, which I love, because it seems to have actually become less predictable with time in 11.04, and something that is meant to allow me to assess at a glance which window is active and focus on it has instead become a tool for assessing whether or not the plugin is working and focusing on my frustration with the fate of less popular plugins and features.

I've found that when using 11.10..
I can hit Alt+F2, type in what I need and hit enter..
but it does absolutely nothing.

Ive not been able to get a command to run using alt+f2 since ive installed this, like 3 weeks ago. lol

You're the only one I know who makes the Orta window decorators not look horrible, which in turn makes the theme very nice to look at. Clean.

Unity's inability to show only the applications on the present workspace is ludicrous, I have no idea why they're so rigid about it. It probably doesn't fit into the "design" plans yet, let's hope for the user's sake it does by 12.04.

Btw, Intel integrated cards are the best. The GMA 4xxx models give you the most troublesome experience on Linux. Anybody using an ancient card is gonna have trouble, imagine what it's like to have an ATI card unsupported by the proprietary drivers, and having to rely on the downclocking abilities of radeon. People with eight year old Intel cards usually complain because they can't run the Kwin Blur, lol, at least their laptops are not burning.

And yeah, I haven't used Alt+F2 since switching to Synapse. Seems redundant, even if Alt+F2 (which for me was xfrun4) has better completion for arbitrary commands. If I really need tab completion, I probably need a terminal window, anyway.

Thanks! Orta is so simple and clean, and then there are those window controls - and the default application tabs aren't much better, although Orta of course provides pretty alternatives.

Yeah, definitely. Intel might have less power outright, but the support is much less likely to cause issues in any number of places from heat to graphical tearing to suspend and resume and so on, and I just like not having to use proprietary drivers.

It's not a huge issue, but it's definitely empty calories kilobytes. The interface is still snappy as hell, but applications certainly launch faster without it. It's just prettier than Wingpanel (and DockBarX on the left is housed in an AWN panel as well, which gives it the intellihide feature, fade transitions, theming to match everything else just a bit better, etc.)

Unfortunatly, I don't know about this hex stuff too much. The Akkadians normally counted in decimal, but there are some cultural hangons with the number 60 because they inherited a lot of there culture from the Sumerians, who did use that system. Sumeriology is very interesting, but it's not really my thing. I'm all about the liturature, and Akkadian has a lot more intereseting stuff to read, especially if you do Biblical studies.

The inactive controls appear even lighter with Ubuntu icons , which I am not a big fan of .:-$

Woah there! You're using too-spaced-out version that went up for a little while. I somehow accidentlily grew the spacing by one pixel while I was still figuring out the program. It's fixed now. Course, if you like it that way, then more power to ya', but the "offical version" is a little different.

I have a feeling the reason it's switching fonts in some places (those smaller letters definitly aren't mine) has to do with the way you call it in .Xresources. I used to get some font substitutions in weird places when I called it as an X core font, but call it with xft in .Xresources, and I don't get that stuff anymore, since xft is able to generate alternative font styles (bold and italic) based on a regular face... Or do you have it set up like that on purpose? I never had anything quite like what's going on on your screen there, even when I mess around in Debian (Speaknig of that, didn't know #! was based on stable. I though it was based on Testing for some reason. I switched my Debian partition to Sid for the lulz. It turns out that it's way less buggy than the 11.10 beta and Fedora 15).

BTW, is that bash? Nice multi-colored shell going on there. I was going to figure out how to do that one of these days, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Maybe I'm not using the final version of the font. There's a program to colorize the bash output, I just can't seem to find it. WIll get back on that. #! is Squeeze, yeah, it started when Squeeze was still on testing, stayed stable then. I'm avoiding Sid and other stuff until the GTK2 to GTK3 mess gets sorted out, thank you.

If you want a multicoloured prompt you should try out zsh which has some inbuilt prompt themes. You just have to load the promptinit module like so:

autoload -Uz promptinit && promptinit

Then to get a list of the available prompt themes run

prompt -l

and to preview them run

prompt -p

You should change the fonts, is this Times New Roman? Anyway, it's got horrible rendering. Right click on the desktop, go to the fonts tab (I think maybe you need to hit "customize" on your selected theme) and play a little.

Open the software center, and install the package ttf-droid. Then use Droid Sans. Dejavu Sans is also ok, as are the Ubuntu fonts. I like the Liberation fonts as well, but not many do.

I haven't changed the interface any. I just added this particular wallpaper of the upcoming Cadillac ELR plug-in hybrid. I made this background too.I grabbed the image from GMInsideNews.com, and made the wallpaper in Photoshop. It's a more simplistic background than my usual collages, but it's still elegant. I added this wallpaper to my DesktopNova rotation.

I like my Mac OS X style desktop... why change it? :)

Nice. I like the quirky characters too (I guess I should), and I actually find that they make it easier to recognize characters. That's the problem with a lot of the fonts that have a novel design approach. Sometimes it hard to figure out which letter your looking at. That's also why my "S" is a little fugly (at least in my opinion). Whenever I tried anything else, I had trouble distinguishing it from the number "5."

But if you like the quirks, you should check out some of the ttf-ocr-a fonts as well. The one in the Ubuntu repos is nice. Unfortunately, I think they are not hinted, so they get blurry at smaller sizes. That's the main reason my font exists.

@el_koraco. Vimtutor is nice, but the real way to learn after you do it is to put vim everywhere else, especially in your browser (pentadactyl FTW!). Once you learn the bindings, you find that they work in almost all of your terminal apps (mostly pagers and curses type stuff, of course, though you can also get shells with vi bindings; i.e. zsh).

Interesting. It just so happens that I installed zsh yesterday. Must be providence (or, more likely, the Arch forums are having a bad influence on me). Maybe I should head over to Daisuke_Aramaki's github and check out all the dot-files he uploaded last week.

My favourite part is having "fortune off" on the desktop, which updates every few minutes with the weather.

Since I have nothing else to do other than post another Windows screenshot.

Just so you know, I'm temporarily "Linux-free" (I still run Linux, but only in virtual machines for now) until I can get a tablet or netbook or whatever later this year. I removed Linux on my own decision due to poor performance compared to Windows (yes, it works on my hardware and nearly everything works to a usable extent, but it still performs worse than Windows and often crashes) as well as me not using it for more than an hour since July. But can ya really blame me? All my favorite games run on Windows and not Linux!

Tat under my clavicle is Greek, in a script I made from an SVG trace of Codex Sinaticus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codex_Sinaiticus), the oldest complete manuscript of the New Testament (circa 350 CE).

Transliteration:

Tat on my sholder in a Paleo-Hebrew script, imitated from the letters as they appear in the Siloam Inscription (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siloam_inscription), which dates to ~700 BCE.

People have asked me if I'm anorexic before. I'm not, but somehow I just don't gain any weight.

Also, I think I'm overdue to post a screenshot. I have a #! setup right now that I'm planning to overwrite in a few minutes with openSUSE Milestone 6 (now known as beta :roll:).
I suppose I'll share it before it's gone.

I switched over to Vim as my full time text editor, and Alpine as my full time email client. I managed to type a paper completely in Vim yesterday. Saved it as a text file and opened it in Abiword. Writing in a transparent terminal is easy on my eyes, and I don't feel like I have to worry about how many pages it takes up. I think I'll keep doing that with openSUSE. Does Konsole support transparency?

On the other hand, I can gain pounds in the shortest amount of time, and then spend months taking them off. Which usually isn't good in summer, when swim season stops (the indoor one, we have a river, but it's not very swimable).

Sure,
Yeah conky can make you want to bash your head on a wall sometimes, but this one is rather simple to "setup"

Here is the conky , in a zip file.~ http://ubuntuone.com/p/12WE/

edit: oh yeah, make sure you have conky installed first lol :P

then...
1.) Unzip the file

2.) Extract the 3 items to, lets say - your desktop.

3.) Install the font~ (double click it and click the "install" button when the window pops up.) [ or just move it to your .fonts folder]

4.) Move the "conky-103-bg.png" image into your home folder. [this is where it will stay]

5.) move the "conkyrc" file into your home folder also, and right click it, rename, and just put a period in front of the 'conkyrc'. So it would be named .conkyrc

Once those things are done..

Just open a terminal,
type in the word conky,
and press enter.
It should toss up a pretty conky onto the right side of your desktop.

That should be it.

Let me know how it goes or if you have a problem.

I'm not real great when it comes to conkys..
and can do only simple things with them..
But this is one of the easiest ive ever used. lol ;)

It's stupid, but LaTeX still isn't the ideal option for writing in the humanities. Might be fine for IWantFroyo, but I can't get it to work for me, at least not with out several days of pain building a template for a for a system with which I have no experience.

And about the skinnyness, 1.90m and 65kg is quite skinny too. And I do love food. Yeah. I'm similar. probably a little skinnier. 1.79m, 54kg (or 5'11", 122lbs., for my illustrious countrymen)

Feels very "autmny/halloweeny" . lol

I love the orb icons in a.c.y.l.
any color you like is my new favorite icon set.
Feels good to not use "clarity" for once, as much as i love it. :lol:

I also found a sweet Ambiance firefox persona made to match ambiance perfectly.
It's very nice.

Does Konsole support transparency?

Yes. Right click -> Configure Current Profile -> Appearance Tab -> Edit... -> Background transparency. You may need to enable desktop effects first before transparency will work.

It's OS X 10.4.11, with OS 9 running in Apple's Classic emulation mode, on my G5.

edit: Was thinking about Sheepshaver, then realized I can run Apple's own version.

I *knew* I was missing something in Unity, but couldn't put a finger on it.

The "autmny/halloweeny" ACYL inlays were the missing piece to the puzzle. :D

Sorry was kinda busy last week with work..
I live in india and we are having a major festival now..

I used a custom script that runs both conky and devilspie

I was having conky previously with the stats to the right
i tried devilspie, it worked after some messing around

Than created a new script that executes both and placed it in the startup apps list.
voila!

You've mentioned that your eclectic music library doesn't necessarily reflect your better judgment, but I salute your taste regardless.

Also, that's getting damned pretty. The GTK sits really well with the borderless WM.

Thanks. "Pretty" comes fairly naturally to me, as far as desktop tweaking. I have to really put my mind to it to come up with "gritty" or "raw." (though that's another matter entirely with pen and paper...). Some thought did go into getting the GTK theme to work with the wm, and the both of them also use colors found in .Xresources for my terminals. I can actually raddle off all the hex codes for the colors I'm using in my GTK theme from memory, though a lot of them are the same, and it's almost all greys, which makes it easier. Let's see here...

document text: #888888
document background: #101010
hilighted item: #333333
text highlight: #FFFF84
tooltip background: #888888

There is probably a proper illness with a name for people who know these things. My brother is worse, however. He's a professional photographer, and he can see a color in real life and give the hex code for it.

As far as the music, I really do just like most music (though I am generally not fond of rap vocals. I like melodies). That includes a lot of really commercial pop, and also a lot of great stuff. I generally appriciate the "good" music a little more, but I'm a real sucker for anything you can dance to.

Yeah. It's a problem in the browser. I'll try what what you said. I don't know why Debian has to be the only distro that I need to do this crap on.

Didn't work. I think this has to do with my refusal to use MS core fonts and whatever they are replaced with by my browser. I got it fixed in Iceweasel by forcing all pages to be rendered with my deafaults. I probably have to specify replacements .fonts.conf to get it sorted in uzbl. I don't want to do that. I'll just use iceweasel.

Debian is really only here for messing around and fixing Arch when I break it beyond bootablity.

And complaining about the font rendering, of course.

Using vim and abiword? Why not vim and LaTeX? LaTeX is made to be edited with pure-text editors, and vim has some nice plugins (although I still use a LaTeX IDE like Latexilla or Kile as editor, they are in fact Gedit and Kate with some extra buttons).

And about the skinnyness, 1.90m and 65kg is quite skinny too. And I do love food.

I've been thinking of using LaTeX, but I need to be able to insert graphs. Any way to insert images into LaTeX docs?

Conky is pretty fun to mess with, but I've found it gets old after a while and never went past the most basic setups, so I can't help you with advanced options like lua scripts.

Yes, that is Ubuntu. Yes, that is the Mint-X theme from Linux Mint... only I'm using the regular Ubuntu Mono Dark icons (based on Humanity) instead of the Mint X ones. Gotta keep it somewhat Ubuntu :) I also changed the AWN theme to Light to match the rest of the Mint X system theme.

Download the .deb files, the latest versions. Open them to bring up the Ubuntu software center. Install the mint-x-icons first, then the mint-x-theme.

Overall, I like how it looks. But this was just me playing with a Linux Mint theme on my netbook. So it's not a permanent change. I'm back to my regular Ambiance theme.

I must say though, you've done good so far!
Much better than I when i first used conky!

unfortunately these conky scripts still confuse me..
and the only way Im ever successful in changing things is when i just sit and fiddle around with the scripts.
Never quite fully sure exactly what it is Im doing or changing..
I just keep messing with things and changing numbers until it comes out how i need it to! :lolflag:

I wish I could give you a quick, precise answer on what it is you should change to get what you need,
But sadly, I cannot. :( lol

It's a fine line to walk, when, like me, Bible stuff has to do with almost every aspect of ones life (both religiously and academically, and hopefully professionally soon), knowing how to talk about who you are and what you do without saying something that stimulates a religious discussion.

The forum administrators take the "no religious discussion" policy very seriously.

I actually maintain (maybe a little too strong of a word...) a blog about biblical studies, but I was asked to remove the link from my signature by the staff cause it seemed to be provoking more commentary than they thought it was worth.

If you like that, here's the way to pwn any console app, and it actually works form many linux gui apps as well, even Banshee(!).

I can totally understand now the lure of tiling WM depending on what you use your system for primarily... And I can see from what I use it for why I am a sucker for Unity. More power to the users that can use them for maximum efficiency :)

I use GParted to setup my drive(s). It's sort of like a text editor for partitions. LoL!

Here's an example (the dual-booter I'm on now):

150 GB HDD - divided in half
2 x 10 GB Root partitions
2 x 63 GB /Home partitions

The trick, if you will, is telling the Ubu installer NOT to format /home (during the fresh install).

When you get ready to do it, just start a new thread, and I'm sure many, many, ppl will help you out - call it pay back time. :)

Adwaita for the GTK+ theme, and...
ACYL for the icons (obviously)

An unlikely combination of light / dark / mono themes, but I'm pleased with the result, so far.

It's just to make it look like I'm actually still an Ubuntu team player. I don't really do anything with this partition except mess with stuff. Scrotwm is so simple, and I'm so satisfied with my current setup on that I have to go over to Ubuntu to play when I get bored. What I really "need" to work out are my crazy scientist plans to move /usr/share and /usr/lib to my data partition without breaking it so I can have the "ultimate tiny system partition."

Ekron is the name of a town in Israel/Palestine, where the god Ba'al apparently had a temple (one of many places). There's a story where this god is mentioned in the Bible. It's the one that's also called Baal Zebub, "Lord of the Fly," which is probably a word-play on what was originally Ba'al Zabul, which is actually attested in Caananite documents, and means 'Mightly Lord.'

Scrotwm is so simple

So beautifully simple, it's amazing. But tell you what, I just set up Natty for my sister, and it's true, it works pretty well with the keyboard. It's just that all the animations are useless when you're keyboard navigating, you don't even see them unless they slow stuff down.

So, here we have background I made from part of the Ugaritic Baal cycle, one of our most important sources about Canaanite mythology.

The PDF reader is Zathura, which is pretty cool. Minimalist interface with vim bindings (like pretty much all of my software).
