The title says it.

I've heard 2 pronunciations, one where the i is long and the other short.

A consumer doesn't take anything away: he doesn't actually consume anything.
Giving the same thing to a thousand consumers is not really any more expensive than giving it to just one. By Linus Torvalds

So maybe Linus it should be but ended up as Linux.

#Read up on Linus Torvalds who is responsible for most all that is Linux.

Who cares how you pronounce it, its whether you can use it or not ;-)

Local dialects, accents change......Linux the kernel is still global.

Aye. Too many people put too much thought into it's pronunciation. At the end of the day, the Linux kernel doesn't give a damn what you call it.

Personally though, I always have, and always will, pronounce it "Lynn-ucks".

I know this is how it is supposed to be pronounced, but I refuse to say it like that... it just sounds so stupid. The worst thing about Ubuntu is the damn name.

LĬ-nəx, to be precise.

and Ubuntu is pronounced OO-BOON-TU

Shuttleworth actually pronounces it ū-BŬN-tū, with a short, accented 'u' (or rather, and accented schwa, but I don't have the capital schwa mapped to my keyboard) in the middle. I pronounce it like you, but we are wrong. At least we are not alone. :)

Phonetics are phun.

Tempt me :evil::biggrin: to do that too, particularly because I keep catching myself pronounce it "you-boon-two".

As pointed out in the last thread on this topic (two weeks ago or so?) even the philosophy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_(philosophy)) is pronounced (closer to) this way. The oo in foot, not boot.

Linux should be taken, reasonably, to rhyme with MINIX, but of course there's always geographical variation.

Pronunciation seems to depend on where a person is from. Good. Then I can pronounce it Lie-nux and I can cover myself since people generally won't know where I'm from.

That'll cover me. :tongue::biggrin: lol.
