So, I wasnt getting much use out of my Acer laptop, and I decided to install Ubuntu on it - I chose 11.04 x64 server so I'd have a slim command-line system I could install only what I wanted on (openbox for the WM).

Looking around, the HW compatibility for Ubuntu seemed quite good, so I went ahead

Install went fine, no errors, but after the first reboot the laptop died - it just won't power on at all.

and to top it off, the laptop's warranty ran out on the 19th, 5 days before it died.

Any ideas? or have I just made myself a 350 brick?

I don't see how the power issue could be possibly related to the install of ubuntu server. Did you try removing the battery and attempt to start only with AC power connected?

Certainly sounds like a hardware fault doesn't it?

Yes I tried battery-only and AC-only power, neither works, took out the keyboard and checked the connection between the power toggle and the motherboard, everything's nice and snug.

Acer have an out-of-warranty support line so I'm going to call that tomorrow and see what they say.
