View Full Version : [ubuntu] Wifi BCM4306 rev03 in Ubuntu 10.04

Hi everyone,

I was using Ubuntu 9.10 and my chipset Broadcom 4306 worked perfectly with the additional proprietary drivers made available. But when I upgraded to 10.04 I realized that my WiFi was not working anymore.

I saw that the STA drivers have been included to the kernel but my chipset has not been added to these drivers. I have a BCM4306 rev03 in my Compaq Presario R3000.

I tried installing the proprietary drivers but nothing happened. Could someone help me fix it? Upgrading to the next versions does not solve the problem so I hope I can find a solution that I will be able to use in the next LTS release as well!

I have already installed bcmwl-modaliases et b43-fwcutter. The button for the wifi does not seem to be working (always LED off ) and before (Ubuntu 9.10 and prior) it was almost constantly ON.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Open synaptics type bcm in search window and install the 2 marked and make sure nothing else bcm installed. Make sure you hit green apply arrow so as to install.
Take wired cable out and reboot.

In Ubuntu 10.04 I can't find firmware-b43-installer. I think I would get that with 10.10 or 11.04. Are you sure it is available in the repositories?

Maybe I should upgrade in order to get this firmware-b43-installer...

Is there another way to fix it in the LTS without using firmware-b43-installer?

You know I do not have a 10.04 left on my system. I should load one just for this reason. I cannot remember
what repository (restricted in 10.04) the bcm or b43 drivers are in. Try typing b43 in the search window of synaptic's,
You have got to have the cards driver and 10.04 worked with the broadcom cards there are just a ton
of machines with those cards, Dells seemed to have just about all broadcom. This will bump it up there
will be a user with a 10..04 around to tell you where those drivers are. I am going to try to find out for you
do the b43 thing, and make sure your repositorys are open in "software sources" main, univers, restricted
multiverse then do a

sudo apt-get update So they are refreshed, then check you Synaptics, I will be back, let me know if you found the drivers for bcm
or b43.

b43 - Internet access

If you have some other kind of Internet access on your computer, you can download the firmware by simply installing the b43-fwcutter package which does the download and setup for you automatically.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=b43-fwcutter.png
Step 1.
To install b43-fwcutter issue the following command in a terminal (under the desktop menu Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and follow the prompts:

~$
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter
### Use the tab key and the arrow keys and the enter key when toggling in the terminal.
This should do you for 10.04.

Hi,

Thank you for your help.

I had already installed b43-fwcutter installed but it never showed me this window and I guess that's why the drivers are not installed.

I tried to remove it in Synaptics and then install it from the terminal.

~$ sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter

Sorry it is in French but basically it installs it and never asks me if I want to extract the firmware...

Any idea why?

In additional drivers are they activated? Synaptics has them installed? You rebooted and took out the wired connection?
b43-fwcutter and firmware-b43-installer are installed?
Nothing else right all other has been removed.
