So, I managed to convince my brother to throw out the useless win 7 on his new HP Envy 14, and install a proper os instead (ubuntu 11.04 32 bit). All's well so far, but apparently he cannot use his HDMI port to connect to his tv now...

Im feeling slightly guilty, as I talked him into switching, and it's kind of important that it functions for him.

Anyone run in to this issue and know of a fix?

I have an envy 14 and the HDMI port worked when I was running 11.04 (I'm on 11.10 beta and it works completely) but I think I had to remove the proprietary driver that was recommended. When I had the proprietary driver I couldn't even use unity, I used Ubuntu Classic (gnome-panel).

the HDMI port worked when I was running 11.04.

Can you explain how you got this working? Currently I'm on 11.10, I have both the intel drivers installed and the radeon drivers installed. It seems that no matter what I change/blacklist/uninstall I cannot get the "Displays" program to recognize any external HDMI monitor.

Got it working now. This is the website that I found the commands on.
