EDIT: fixed it, needed to install 2.6.38 from bpo and linux-base 3.3 from bpo
Consider this problem solved.
Still, will leave it up as a sort of minithread for people to discuss getting these things working in Debian.
And I had 0 hrs sleep!

I thought I had it, but I need to check out a different one now  - By the way, need to go to bed, need to get up in 4 hrs!

So even though I now have it working, bang goes my hopes of having any telly to watch!
Can someone point me in the right direction (for Debian) please?
Help needed or else I won't have telly to watch this afternoon either.
I might not have telly to watch anyway because my aerial is indoor :(
