I was wondering about how these remote desktop things work.

I have an ssh server running on my desktop. I can ssh from old laptop and get in, then for instance start firefox. However, if i want to watch a youtube video, it's extremely laggy. I think this is because of the extreme amount of bandwith video takes.
however, how do complete desktop viewing clients (like teamviewer, or a simple vnc connection) get around this? Aren't they pretty much transmitting a huge interactive video from the server to the client?

Also why is so computationally intensive for the client to show the video from the desktop (in X/ssh)? Isn't the video already decompressed/decoded and only needs to be displayed?
