This may seem like a very stupid question, but how do you guys get a shell to appear on the desktop?

E.g. like this guy --> http://hungsquirrel.org/images/ubuntu.png ?

I've tried changing the terminal settings but can only make part of the terminal go opaque.

HungSquirrel

sudo apt-get install Eterm
Eterm -f white -n DeskTerm -O -x --buttonbar false --scrollbar false
That makes a transparent term with no window borders or scrollbars.

You need to install Cedega and use it to run steaminstall.exe to install Steam. The use Steam to download CS.

I'd sent you a direct link to the tutorial but the site has been slashdotted. At any rate, when the dust settles, head over to linux-gamers.net (http://linux-gamers.net).

The theme is at gnome-look.org and instructions on how to do that to the gnome-panel are in the README and gtkrc.

No extra software is needed!

Enjoy!

Thanks for the information, I found the theme. But there is neither a README nor a gtkrc init. Can I also just install it through the gnome theme manager?

Are they also usable for XFCE?

Thanks for the help

localhost:~# ls .themes/Edge
NEWS README gtk-2.0 index.theme metacity-1
the gtkrc is in .themes/Edge/gtk-2.0

No one has reported any problems so you should be able to install through the gnome-theme-manager.

They? Well, not the metacity themes. They would have to be ported. The gtk works but the statusbars in the xfce4 panel applets are really hard to see as discussed at gnome-look.

ah I got it now. I took the metacity themes. That's why the installation didn't work.
sorry for my mistake.

still wondering how the bottom taskbar has been made. Mine still looks as the standard gnome taskbar.

Is it another configuration?

thanks

If you want the bottom round panel, in the gtkrc comment out
include "panel.rc"
and uncomment
include "panel-round.rc".

Like this;
#include "panel.rc"
include "panel-round.rc"

THEN!!! Right-click the panel>click on properties>
click on the Background tab>tick 'Background image'>
click the Browse button and select Edge/gtk-2.0/panelbg-properties.svg

you may then need to reset the theme and then
killall gnome-panel

read the last postings. I asked the same question. Either you download it and install it by gnome-theme-manager or manually

Thank you I sorted that out now.

However, when viewing the edge-flawed screenshot as posted above, my minimize/maximize/close icons do not show on windows ? Also, my gnome start icon is still the default, it is not showing as the one included in the download ? It seems the "icons" directory is not loading or something ?

There are 3 metacity themes
Edge (original and in the default download)
Edge2 (seen in the Edge-Flawed screenie -diff buttons)
Edge3 (same buttons as Edge but titlebar of Edge2)

Edge2 and 3 are also at gnome-look as an alternate download (2 metacity themes only)

the gnome-main-menu icon may not show depending on the icon theme and whether you have or may need, shouldn't have to but hey....
killall gnome-panel

I put the icon you get in the download in
Marcintesh_OS-L-White-Icons/128x128/apps
but you could do it for/with any theme, that way it is sure to be loaded either from the iconrc in the gtk theme or the icon theme.

But, the 2nd industrial screenie from zenwhen looks like this: http://zenhardwhere.com/images/currentdesktopthumb.png (http://zenhardwhere.com/images/currentdesktop.png)

The 2nd one shows industrial but not so bright (finally ;-) ). How is this possible? Are the above screenshots actually two different themes or something like that?

Newer versions of Industrial have the darker blue. That's probably either a newer gtkrc or a Hoary screenshot. Since hoary would have a newer version of Industrial.

I'm not sure what icon theme that is, but the bar itself is none other than starterbar. It's a gdesklets display widget. There's a good gdesklets howto here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=3012&highlight=gdesklets

Unfortunately it would be tough, but possible. Using a pixmap for a background is really slow with the pixmap and svg engines and the way widgets are drawn and stretch they wouldn't all blend the same, INTO, the background image.

Metacity couldn't do the transparent corner titlebar either.

Ah the joys of limits. :-(

Because the theme of ubuntu is supposed to be world harmony and all that kinda stuff I thought it would be fun to go mad on my very international music vid collection. So here are many of my faves from Turkey, Russia, Spain, US, Korea... Yes, they were all playing at once, and yes, it actually sounds pretty cool. (And I still haven't figured out if that dude in Mumij Troll is, in fact, a dude).

The "theme," what you can see of it, is a modified digital cream with gorilla icons - a theme I call "digital punk banana monkey (go! go! go!)." It's smooth and creamy and tan and techno - just like I like...

here's my new one for the new year.
Not too thrilled about the theme, but it's the only greenish one i've found that i semi-like.

* Gdesklets, of course...

and this other, I can't remember what theme was but the wallpaper can be found at appleseed site (anime), this was just to show that gdesklets worked. =)

re: http://thilockdominus.freehomepage.com/images/screenshot3.jpg , what is your theme, controls, icon set, & borders?

Well, The icon set is based on Matrix rebooted which can be found at gnome-look.org mixed with icons I found at gentoo homepage, plus taken some icons from diffrent themes and mixed alltogether.
The Theme is Bloodline, I can't remember which border, but try with diffrent ones.
The terminal is Eterm which I set up totally transparent. The wallpaper is from Diviant-art called worldwar 20-something.
It was my first used theme on Ubuntu :-D

A reboot is not necessary, just restart your X server with ctrl + alt + backspace.

You don't even need to do that (as that will kill off any app you have open) just open up a cmd line and type:
killall gnome-panel

that will kill it and restart it, leaving the rest intact.. =D>
