I am just wondering how to switch to the gnome desktop environment. or whatever the cube like shape spinning in 3d is. kinda a n00b.

Sadly, this is no longer available in Oneiric. GNOME 2.x is now deprecated and replaced by GNOME 3. You can install gnome-shell or gnome-session-fallback and select them at the login screen.

I'm not about to try it --I've broken enough in Oneiric for a few day, thanks :tongue: but if the O.P. were to install the CompizConfiguration System manager package, the Cube is one of the one of the items listed. Right now I'm using Gnome-Shell which I believe doesn't use Compiz. Hmmm, I wonder if that's what causing the "crash" message to appear? ;) I don't know if that will work in Unity or in Gnome classic with effects enabled or not. Guess I'm an ol' fuddy-duddy who doesn't concern himself with bling.
