View Full Version : Banshee is a bad choice for the default media player.

It's very crashy, repeatedly screws up subscribed podcasts, keeps fetching the wrong album cover art, and keeps saying that I haven't listened to songs that I have. Rhythmbox is so much better.

I find Rhythmbox to be fine for my needs too! - :guitar:

My experience with Banshee is a mixed one.
Pros
- Different types of media, not just audio
- Ability to search videos on Internet Archive
- Album covers in browsing
- Smart Playlists
- Starting playlist from Sound Menu
- Overall good looking (subjective of course)
Cons
- New podcasts aren't fetched from the RSS
- Random crashes (luckily not so often)
- Little heavy on resources (not as bad as I feared)

I've never really had any problems with Banshee. The very occasional crash, but that's about it. And I've only ever had 2 or 3 wrong album covers. It even gets some that iTunes doesn't. I do like the GUI a lot. I'm trying to get to know Amarok and the main thing that's throwing me off is the GUI. Most of the other differences I like so far. Anyway, I say keep Banshee as the default media player in Ubuntu.

I just use VLC. Most people have no need of a do-it-all program like Banshee. Scripts can easily download podcasts, and manage them much better. VLC is clean, light, and will play anything I care to throw at it.

You're kidding, right? If you're going to write a script to do that, you're not really saving yourself any time over just visiting the websites in question and downloading them that way. Same for internet radio. Those functionalities are what have really sold me on Rythmbox.
Banshee seems fine and I haven't experienced this instability firsthand. I just can't get past the clunky interface, and I don't really like the idea of integrating the video player into the music player like that. Two very separate functions, to my mind.

Have you tried replacing it? Your not tied to any software that comes with Ubuntu you can install / remove software of your choosing.

It works for some things, and not for others. For my needs, it works.
I admit I don't listen to podcasts much (if at all), but for most of my media downloading, I use scripts. It isn't actually that hard.

Yet, most people use the GUI.

I've also replaced banshee for rhythmbox. My main reason is the shoutcast plugin for scanning shoutcast radios, never been able to do that in banshee. I also don't like the idea of a video player mixed with audio player. In my experience i've never used banshee to play any kind of video, ever.
But i like all the integration with the music stores like ubuntu and amazon, and the interface. No problem with resource usage too.

Yeah, I would prefer just to have the Amazon music store in Rhythmbox - not that I'm using U1 anyway to appreciate it - but I can see why Canonical might have felt that a music player that could support music videos would be a better fit for users used to the iTunes, WMP way of doing things. I'd personally rather have a player that just does all things audio, well - but that's what Rhythmbox is for. = D

I can't get it to play any of my Mp3s. I see the song playing in the play bar but no sound. I have a Soundblaster Xi-Fi Extreme and in the hardware part of preferences it is recognized or seems to be. Yet no sound. I even tested speakers and the sound comes through but not on Banshee. I was even prompted to download and install some plugins but was also told that they may not work with all formats. Since when is mp3 an unsupportable format? How do I troubleshoot the sound? The volume is up all the way but I can't hear anything out of my headphones.

Just to make sure, have you tried other music players?

Give Guayadeque a go. It manages large collections very well, has a whole lot of features and is still relatively lightweight. I can't praise it enough.

I hate it. Completely useless for managing my music collection and my 120GB ipod classic.

Clementine is very superior to rhythmbox and banshee.

It goes without saying (although it has been said so many times before maybe it does not need to be said now) that it is down to personal preference.
I'm trying to get to know Amarok and the main thing that's throwing me off is the GUI.
In my humble opinion, Amarok 1.4 was the best player. When Amarok 2 came out I was gutted by the interface and the loss of features that I relied on. Fortunately other people felt the same, and forked 1.4 to Clementine. I LOVE IT! Highly recommended!
EDIT: Have just seen that most of this thread is from last year... oh well...
