Great news!. No need to Wine anymore. :cool:

Picasa is available here for these GNU/Linux distributions:

* Debian Sid and Etch
* Fedora Core 4 and 5
* Mandriva 2005 and 2006
* Red Hat (current versions)
* Linspire 5.0
* SUSE 9.3 and 10
* Ubuntu 5.x :KS :KS :KS :KS

Get it here (http://picasa.google.com/linux/)

Notes:-
Picasa for Linux isn’t open source; it uses a carefully tested version of Wine to run the current Windows version of Picasa. Wine itself is an open-source implementation of the Windows API. It runs on top of the X Window System and Linux or Unix.

Yes, the linux version of Picasa runs on Wine.
Also, what's the use of this, really, since there are already equivalent such as Gwenview, F-Spot, and other?

The difference is that you don't need to setup wine or anything else, you just have to install a deb.

Can any of the Open Source alternatives do the 'I'm feeling lucky' on photos?
I use Picasa for that particular features to enhance the photos and for its tagNSearch options.
I look forward to their Linux Offerings on Desktop Search and Earth.

oh realy?
thus you need to use Wine
not necessarily in the way you imagined.

Do I understand you correctly if I say that I don't need to have Wine itself installed to get Picasa to run, because the Wine features that it uses are built in?

Most probably it is just not that a few wine features are built-in, almost whole of the wine is built-in. The download size is 16mb, picassa is nearabout 3mb!

Here what Google says:

"So, how does it work? Picasa for Linux runs the current Windows version of Picasa using a carefully tested version of Wine, an open-source implementation of the Windows application-programming interface (API). Wine runs on top of the X Window System and Linux or Unix. But it’s not a Windows emulator; instead, it provides a Windows API middleware layer that enables Windows programs to run on Linux without the slowing effects of OS emulation or a virtual machine.

To allow Picasa to run well on Linux, Google made a few improvements to Wine. Some of the changes were Picasa-specific and simply added a bit of polish. (They probably won’t be of use to other applications, and may not be needed in future versions of Picasa, either.) None of the changes were proprietary to Google, and all have been contributed to the Wine project. The source for all the changes is available at http://code.google.com/wine.html."
