Time Sensitive: Need urgent help with generic usb phone

Hi all,

The last time I plugged in my phone about a month ago it was instantly recognized as a usb mass storage device. I've NEVER had a problem with this until now.

This is a generic China phone that has no drivers and has never needed them before. I've been plugging this phone in since I've owned it without problem. When I plug it in, I am asked on the phone ends if I want to instigate a storage, webcam, or com port session. In the past both storage and com port (never tried webcam) were instantly recognized without a glitch.

I need to get some data off my phone and it's an emergency. It must be done now.


I've tried every method that I've come across so far. Nothing works: lsusb doesn't list the phone
fdisk -l shows nothing.
gparted shows nothing.
mod_usb changes nothing.
When I plug the phone in it recharges without problem.
The phone asks me which session to initiate without problem.
Unpluggin everything, rebooting, and trying again does nothing.


All of a sudden, at a crucial juncture, this phone won't connect no matter what.

No, I haven't tried that. I could try that.

But my whole business is one this machine and a week of reconfiguration if I wipe it and reinstall.

So I really need a fix within my present framework...

No, I haven't tried that. I could try that.

But my whole business is one this machine and a week of reconfiguration if I wipe it and reinstall.

So I really need a fix within my present framework...

Yes but you could boot into your liveCD, see if it is recognised then pull it from your phone onto the computers internal hard drive.

Well. I booted to the instal cd. nothing.

The software I installed didn't help either.

I figured it must be the phone, because my 4bg stick works fine and so does the usb dongle I have.

I was about to give up.

But I noticed something. Network manager is picking up and listing my phone as a possible wifi com port. But it says disconnected and I can't select it. (See attachment. It's the Huawei Mobile.)

So on the hal level (?) the computer is recognizing the phone. But all attempts at interfacing with it fail.

Doesn't that mean it's a config, setting, or missing library kind of problem?

Probably a config issue. Have you maybe changed something on the phone?
