So there I'll be, doing what I do online, when out of the blue, my screen goes black except for a series of white vertical bars which flash on and off once a second. Nothing remedies this except for rebooting.

This NEVER happens in Windows mode (it's a dual-boot machine. Dell Optiplex GX-260 with Win XP Pro as the other OS).

What can be done about this bug, other than uninstalling Ubuntu and resigning myself to paying tribute to The Overlords of Redmond forever?

I have the same problem and might have some relevant information.

I had 10.04 installed for 6 to 8 months before the problem appeared and I suspect something in one of the updates is the culprit.

I installed 10.04 in another partition so I could run it to see if the problem went away with the new installation. I ran this installation for about a week without incident - and it worked fine until tonight when I installed the 'Important' updates using Update Mgr. Within an hour of the update the problem showed up on the newest installation.

I don't have the answer, but I have some questions:
Did you install the updates?
Did you operate the system for a time before installing the updates?
Did the problem begin before or after the updates?

I hope this helps to find the solution.
