Complete beginner with no idea what most of these commands do. My computer has been ubuntu'd for about half the day(windows decided to accuse of not having a legal operating system -which is completely not true- and locked itself up), and I'm learning quite a lot of stuff but I need to fix a problem with the audio badly, I have a big presentation coming up in 2 days. :(

This version is 10.4 and my laptop is an Asus G50V.

What do I need to do? I've checked some other threads and haven't had much results entering commands. Thank you in advance!

One thing you could try is alsamixer. To use it, hit Alt-F2 and type
gnome-terminal. Then type
alsamixer and trying moving the sound meters up and down with the keyboard arrows.

Good luck!

Otherwise, have you looked into PulseAudio?

Tried changing values on alsamixer but hasn't been very productive.

I haven't heard of PulseAudio, how does it work?
