mp3 + video

I wondered why the default music and video players can't actually play my music and videos. The music is in mp3 format of course and the movies are divx or similar.

I sort of heard that there is something you can apt-get so that it works, but i didn't read of it so far. What source did i miss?

And is there a source for such information?

I have the same problem with my iBook. I'm working on figuring out what is going on. I'll post here if I make any progress towards getting audio and video playback to work.

as there seems to be no version of mplayer for power pc machines i took the video lan client -VLC- via synaptic.
it plays most audio and video formats, but at least on my iMac G4 i still have problems with dvd-playback as well as with buggy playlist behaviour (cannot drag and drop more than one file from nautilus).
nevertheless at least it works...you have to add the universe directory to the update sources, then search for VLC and install the packages you find...
