REALLY stupid question--how do I tell if I have the 32-bit or 64-bit version of 11.04 installed?

Type at the terminal:

uname -a

If you see a "64" in the output, you've got a 64-bit install. If not, you don't.

uname -m is better as it is more specific

Is there any way to upgrade from 32 to 64 without trashing what I've got? I have an AMD Phenom quad core processor. Thanks.

As far as I know you'll need to install 64 bit from new, I don't think there's a way to upgrade 32 > 64.
