I installed Ubuntu 11.04 to my new laptop. Otherwise Ubuntu is working well but HDMI sound is missing.

After installing Ubuntu 11.04 I ran Update Manager. After that I followed these instructions:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules
but no help.

aplay -l output is:

aplay -D plughw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav output is:
================================================== ========
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono

but no sound at all.

"System Settings -> Sound -> Sound Preferences -> Hardware -> Profile: Digital stereo (HDMI) output -> Test Speakers" does not produce sound at all.

Any help is welcome. Thanks.

I'm not sure if this helps on your case, but it does on mine..but put this line on your alsa-base.conf

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

Apparently you "have" to power off your computer so you will hear the sound from the output.. weird..but it works :s

The OP could post the outputs from:
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0.0
dmesg | grep HDMI
(need the HDMI device connected & turned on, no HT amps or HDMI switchers, X server screen active)

One thing more. Now I have fresh installation of Ubuntu 11.04. Only UpdateManager updates have been done. LinuxAlsaDriverModules have not been installed.

I tested this option earlier and it didn't help:
options snd-hda-intel model=auto

The linux alsa kernel drivers modules are part of the std ubuntu kernel.
The alsa user-space drivers/libraries are part of the std ubuntu distribution.

The command I really meant to ask ...

cat /proc/asound/card0/eld#0.0

Are there any other eld# files in that path ?

Does this make noise ?
speaker-test -c 2 -r 48000 -D hw:0,3

Hi,

There is only one eld# file. See below its content:

Your laptop is an Sandybridge Optimus graphics with GT540M ?

Your results as very unusual compared to what I expected..
codec#3 & eld#3.0 seem to be associated with hw:0,3.

If this is correct...then your monitor is not detected.

I guess you are running the intel graphics only.
I imagine the problems could be related to displayport bugs with intel driver or sandybridge support problems.
